Loyal and Essence, recent high school graduates and lovers, are thrown into turmoil when Loyal is sentenced to two years in prison, leaving Essence in the dark about the reason. During his absence, Essence faces the trials of pregnancy, single motherhood, and a strained relationship with her mother.
