Sorry I can't resist the angst :p I might write a Nathaniel chapter soon.
______

It's the stereotypical day in the agency. Ranpo eating candy, Naomi not leaving poor Tanizaki alone, etc.

Kunikida is sitting at his desk. Busily typing up his report on his computer. Trying his best to stay on schedule, even though Dazai makes that VERY hard for him.

Y/n is also sitting at his desk.

But he's been.. different, lately. More tired, more closed off, distancing himself from most of their coworkers.

His head down on the desk, resting on his arm. While his finger circles on the brim of his empty coffee mug. His hair an absolute mess, tired eyes, wearing a hoodie and baggy jeans.

He's silent for quite a while, before finally speaking.

"Doppo. If i.. hypothetically told you today would be my last day on earth. what would you do..?" Y/n softly asked.

Kunikida glanced over at Y/n for a second. A stoic expression on his usually stern face. Before returning back to his work.

"Hypothetically, I'd tell you to go to hell." Is all he replied with as he types.

Y/n doesn't say anything else after that. He gives a small "hm." And his finger continues brushing the rim of his coffee mug.

Kunikida can see how quiet and motionless Y/n is from his peripheral. He puts his best efforts to continue his work and not get distracted.

But he can't help but wonder what's going on with his coworker.

In the early morning, Kunikida walks up the stairs to the office. His suit perfectly on, hair tied, and holding his notebook.

He enters the office and goes straight to his desk. Setting his notebook down.

The file for his new case is on his desk already. Picking it up and opening it.

A death by suicide case. The victim.. Y/n.

Kunikida's hand freezes as he stares at the paper.

Y/n's smiling face stares up at him from the page in the file. Kunikida has no reason to react this this way.

He's a detective. He has seen plenty of death and crime.

A young coworkers death should not bring him feelings of dread, right?

But the face of this young man, a good natured coworker with messy curls and overly casual sense of fashion was the last thing he expected to be in his file that day.

Suddenly a wave of quilt washes over him. Memories of the previous day flash in his head.

Why did I say that to him..?

Why didn't I say something different..?

Those thoughts plagued his mind.

He grips the file tightly in his hand.

He's always been a professional. He has many years of experience under his belt as a detective. He's usually not the type to show his emotions at work.

But right now, he doesn't know how to react.

He doesn't know how to do his job.

His mind is all over the place. He was inactive. He was dismissive.

This was his coworker.

This was his failure.

He gets up and leaves the room. His coworkers giving him a confused look as he leaves in the middle of work.

But his eyes see only a blue of colors as he leaves the room.

Soon he's outside. The sunlight flashes in his eyes. He glances up at the sky.

Kunikida has never felt so empty in his life.
