Uzi lay in bed, cocooned beneath a tangle of blankets. The morning sun streamed through the curtains, casting a gentle light across the room. Yet despite the bright and inviting weather, Uzi was ensconced in her fortress of fabric, barely making a move as she relished the soft, comforting embrace of her bed. Her body felt heavy, her energy sapped by the growing demands of her pregnancy.

N, ever the attentive partner, sat by the bed, his expression a mix of concern and affection. He’d been a steadfast presence through the ups and downs of Uzi’s pregnancy, and his efforts to keep her happy and comfortable were evident. He wore a light blue scarf, wrapped snugly around his neck even though the temperature outside was well into the 80s. The scarf was not a fashion statement; it was a shield—one of the many ways he had been trying to comfort Uzi while hiding the evidence of their more passionate moments

“Uzi, come on,” N’s voice was gentle but persistent. “We have the ultrasound today. Remember? It’s the one that checks for any potential defects and makes sure the baby is developing normally.”

Uzi groaned, pulling the blanket up over her head. “I know, but it’s so cozy here. Can’t we just skip it and stay in bed all day?”

N chuckled softly, reaching out to push the blankets away gently. “I don’t think the doctors would appreciate that. Plus, today’s special. We’re finally going to find out if we’re having a little girl or boy.”

That perked Uzi up, albeit just a bit. She turned her head to peek out from under the blankets, her eyes meeting N’s. “You’re right. It’s kind of a big deal. But you know, I still don’t have any name ideas.”

N raised an eyebrow, a thoughtful expression crossing his face. “We’ll figure it out. Remember how we talked about naming the baby after someone special? I’ve already picked out a middle name, but we need to settle on a first name.”

Uzi sat up, rubbing her eyes and looking at N with a mixture of curiosity and skepticism. “And what’s this middle name you’ve picked out? You keep hinting at it, but you never actually say.”

N hesitated for a moment before speaking. “I want the middle name to be after my real mother."

Uzi frowned, her brow furrowing in confusion. “But N, you’ve told me you don’t remember your biological mother’s name. How can you choose a name if you don’t even know it?”

N’s eyes softened with a touch of sadness. “I never said I was going to name them after my biological mother."

Uzi nodded slowly, her expression thoughtful. “I still don't get it. But doesn't it still feel a bit... incomplete, not knowing your mother's name?”

N shrugged lightly. “Maybe. But it’s not actually that important to me. And I thought maybe you could choose the first name. After all, it should be something you love.”

Uzi’s mind began to churn, but frustration quickly followed. “The only names I’ve come up with are, like, names for guns or weapons. You know, things like ‘Tommy’ or ‘Beretta.’ But you’ve already said you don’t like those.”

N smiled ruefully. “Yeah, I’d prefer something a bit more traditional. Maybe something with a meaningful connection to you.”

Uzi sighed, falling back against the pillows. “You know I don’t really care about what other people think. Your opinion and mine are the only ones that matter. But right now, I’ve got nothing.”

N leaned forward, gently brushing a strand of hair away from Uzi’s face. “It’s okay. We don’t have to decide today. We have time. But let’s get through the ultrasound first. Maybe seeing the baby will help inspire us.”
