It was the middle of the night, I was in my father's office reading a book about red dragons. They were pretty common, the typical fire breathing bunch. Flares, my dad called them, he didn't care much for them but still taught me all there was to know about the winged beasts we called dragons.
The fire crackled from the fireplace beside me. It was nice having something to keep me warm as I read. The only thing I found interesting about these particular fire breathing dragons, was the fact that when a mother or father lost their egg, all they had to do was let out a special roar. The roar was called a Lurin. A Lurin was a roar that parents used to alert all dragons in the area to keep an eye out for their missing baby. Sometimes, even the dragons used a Lurin for missing friends and family members.
I couldn't help but wish my dad could let out a roar so that I could know where my lost sister and mother were. The only thing I remembered about my sister was holding her right after when my mom gave birth to her.
"Ambrose," My father interrupted my thoughts. He slammed the door open when he came into the office, his eyes wide with excitement. "I know where your sister is." Wow, getting straight to the point, huh pops?
"You do?" I stood up from the comfy leather armchair I was sitting on earlier and tossed my book aside. "What about mom? Do you know where she is?"
"Ambrose, I told you to never ask about..." Father bent his knees and grit his teeth to hiss, "Cassandra!" Father looked annoyed and frustrated. This is what he often did whenever I tried to bring up mom. One time, while we were eating breakfast, I asked if mom loved dragons like I did but it must have been a bad day for father because he flipped the table we were eating at.
"I'm sorry father..." I tried to keep a straight face. Father always said that it's not good to show emotion, because emotion was weakness. And besides, if I were to break down crying, my father would punish me by making me sleep outside. Like he always did.
"Just don't do it again!" He put his hand over his forehead like he was blocking the sun from his eyes. His face wore a look of frustration. He said that emotion was weakness, so why did he always show his?
"Yes Father..." I muttered and stared at the ground.
"Yeah, yeah. Anyway, your sister is currently studying at a place called Revenrie Academy." He continued on. "I mean, that's what a little raven confirmed for me."
"She goes to that school?" I looked up. Wow, the school I went to was in Normana. I had heard rumors about Revenrie Academy being prestigious, all about magic, and teaching the most powerful witches of all time.
"Yes, and I'm gonna need you to break into the school for me." Father was pacing the room now. He only did that when he was nervous or excited. I ignored him, instead, I thought of my sister.
"It's been so long..." I murmured, "How did you find her?"
"I was visiting Seycha to look for that darn bronze key but then I heard a lot of noise coming from a school. Apparently there was an event there. And the gates had just been opened to the public, a big crowd of people were already going in when I arrived." My father explained. "I decided to give it a shot, so I took a seat and watched the show. It was a bit boring at first, I got there just in time to see the winners of the first round. But then I saw your sister playing in a tournament between a school, the host school was called Lurid Academy, and another school. That school was Revenrie Academy. I could tell it was your sister because she looked exactly like your mother and she had that golden pocket watch. But still, I needed someone in the school to confirm for me." Once again, I focused on my sister.
"Woah! Did she win the battle?" I was so happy that my sister participated in a tournament. I wished I was there to watch her. Knowing my family's genes, she probably did win.
"She fought so well that she won the match and won the best performance award!" Father looked really proud. I wish he looked at me like that sometimes.
"Wow!" I exclaimed, trying to hide what I had just thought. "What's she like?"
"Well, from what I saw, she was brave." Father smiled while nodding. "She was also very blunt, speaking her mind and using it as a distraction technique against her opponents. Which was actually kind of smart." Father really was proud of her. Of course my sister was brave and smart, everyone was when Father compared them to me. But I would be lying if I said I doubted my sister was talented, our genetics had a lot of talent running down our veins.
"Where is she currently staying?" I asked another question.
"Her and your mom's friend's triplets were adopted by a witch by the name of Vivian M. Mara." Father said. "Vivian is also a teacher at your sister's school so I think it would be quite hard to get your sister out of there." Father's voice lowered to a murmur. Haroth wanted to get Aurelia out of school? What? Father was quiet for a long while. He now had his hand, which was clenched into a fist, under his chin. He was thinking quite deeply. But still, I was impatient.
"When do I get to meet my sister?" I asked my father.
"You're going to Revenrie Academy tomorrow, so you can try and bring her home to me," Father responded, not looking at me.
"Don't you mean bring her home to us?" I raised my eyebrows in annoyance, and I couldn't help but scowl.
"Yeah, yeah, us." Father waved it off.
"But isn't that kidnapping? I also don't want to interrupt her studies. She must have a lot of work to do at Revenrie Academy." I questioned my father. "And then there's her so-called cousins, and she probably has friends, and maybe-"
"Who cares?!" Father exclaimed, finally looking up, he looked crazy with his eyes that were bloodshot and his messy hair, "I don't even need this library but I built it for you. I didn't build this library because I cared about studies!" Father exhaled loudly. "But now, you will have a sister to share it with. I heard she even tamed a dragon. She's so much like you and your mom." Father hugged me, he rarely hugged me.
"What's her name?" I didn't want to let go of this moment. I wanted to keep hugging him, and I wanted him to keep hugging me. Father let go of me and brushed invisible dirt off his shoulders. He then proceeded to "fix" my hair.
"Her name is Aurelia." Father seemed satisfied with how I looked. "Looks like her so-called-cousins picked a good name for her." Father grinned the most wicked grin I had ever seen. "Even after I killed their parents." He began to laugh crazily and obnoxiously.
"I still don't think that was nice of you, but ok." I began to join him and his laughing. Deep inside, I was glad that my little sister grew up without our father.
What kind of person would she be if she grew up with Haroth? Would she still be the same, talented and smart person she is now? Probably, but she wouldn't use her intelligence for the right reasons. Or not. I don't know what he would've done to her if she rebelled against him. From what I knew about her, she was strong and brave, definitely the type to speak up against Father. Maybe she was even better off not knowing about us.
Well what was the harm in meeting her? Time to see for myself if she was the kind of person I made her out to be.
