Sorscha had always wanted to work with children. The idea of helping to raise the next generation and encouraging them to be loving and kind seemed so perfect to her. On her first day studying childcare, she'd had no idea what to expect. Much to her surprise, college was far kinder to her than she'd ever anticipated. She'd made a promise to herself that she'd always be true to herself so from the first day, she'd been completely honest. Quickly, she'd found herself a group of friends that others would have described as outcasts, but they preferred the term free spirits. They didn't judge each other and they didn't judge themselves.
Clodagh was on her mind every single day. She hadn't heard from the brunette, there was no trace of her online and sometimes, Sorscha started to lose hope. To distract herself she'd decided to create a society for LGBT youths and as the months passed by, more and more members joined. She was able to channel the judgement she'd received into helping others accept themselves, making sure that they never felt the way she had. George was always on her mind, every time a student told her they were scared for their safety. More and more, Sorscha really came to believe that she could make a difference in this world.
One Saturday morning as she was eating her breakfast, her Mammy came rushing into the dining room excitedly. "Look what I've got love!" She proceeded to hold out a little rainbow pin, before adding "I'm going to pin it to my bag." Sorscha smiled and replied "thanks Mammy. I know it's not always been easy, but I know you've always supported me. I love you." Her Mammy kissed her forehead and replied "I love you too. I'm so proud of you for setting up this society. You should always be proud of who you are love."
The world didn't seem so small anymore. Before Sorscha knew it, she was applying to university and wondering where she'd belong. Eventually, she settled on studying childcare in Liverpool and whenever she'd imagine moving away, her heart skipped a beat every time. It was time for a truly fresh start, a big bustling city and new people with open hearts.
As she packed up her things, she wondered if she'd miss this place. She knew she'd miss her parents, but she wouldn't miss the memories these roads held for her. Walking back from her Nanny's, rejected and defeated. The lonely spot where George lost his life, gone in an instant. On the day before her big move, she'd made sure to visit him and say see you later (never goodbye) as she'd always be back for him. Sorscha knew that long into the future, once his parents had passed away his grave would always be covered with flowers no matter what, she'd make sure of it.
The first night in her new dormitory room felt strange. Alone and free in the big wide world at last, the opportunities were endless. As she rested her head on her pillow, she thought of Clodagh. The brunette was always her first and last thought every day, but as Sorscha drifted off to sleep, she realised something. Her hope really was fading.
She was so sure that Clodagh had forgotten about her.
