It was Saturday morning and Sorscha was up bright and early, waiting for a knock on her door. As soon as she heard it she rushed to answer immediately, beaming when she saw Clodagh waiting for her. "Mammy, I'm off now" she shouted and just as she shut the front door she heard her Mam reply "alright love, see you later!" The two girls walked together, giggling and chatting until they'd arrived at George's house. They knocked on for him and waited, both shouting "hey gorgeous" as soon as he opened the door. George laughed in response, his warm brown eyes glistening. "Girls, I've got some bad news. I can't come down to the river today, I've got to help my Mam sort the attic out." As he ran his hand through his sandy coloured hair and smirked, so Sorscha narrowed her eyes slightly. It was her belief that George absolutely could come down to the river, but he was nothing if not the world's best matchmaker. He was always telling Sorscha that she needed to be brave and tell Clodagh how she felt and he took every opportunity to bring the two girls together.
As they walked back down the path, waving goodbye to George, his Mother popped her head out of an upstairs window and shouted "sorry to steal him from you girls. Have a good day!" It was easy to see where George got his kind nature and relaxed attitude from. Sorscha and Clodagh wandered down to the river and watched as various ducks and swans passed them by. For a little while they chatted about nothing of substance, both simply enjoying the other's company. Suddenly, Sorscha had the strange feeling that it was now or never, so as they walked together she caught Clodaghs hand in hers before saying "do you believe in soulmates?" The brunette stopped in her tracks, causing Sorscha to do the same. Turning to look into Clodaghs eyes, she waited nervously for her response. The brunette smiled "I didn't used to, but I do now." They both knew what that meant and at that moment, nothing else needed to be said. The two girls embraced each other and immediately Sorscha realised, home wasn't a place - it was a person.
The afternoon passed by in a blur and before they knew it, it was time to leave. As the girls walked back towards the village they held hands once again and giggled together, no worries to speak of in that moment. Just before they parted ways for the day, Sorscha placed a gentle kiss on Clodaghs forehead and afterwards she felt proud that she'd been so brave. Neither girl noticed the eyes that were watching them from afar, judging their affection and their actions.
Sorscha walked home with a smile on her face, thinking of Clodagh and her comforting smile. She couldn't wait to see her again, the brunette was fast becoming the light in her life.
As Clodagh walked home however, a feeling of dread overwhelmed her. She couldn't shake the feeling that she was being followed. Shaking her head, she told herself that she was simply being paranoid, it was just starting to get dark and she wondered if that was really causing her to feel afraid.
It wasn't the dark and she wasn't being paranoid. Just as she'd settled slightly, everything changed. As four hooded figures surrounded her, calling her slurs and telling her that they'd seen her and Sorscha together, her heart sank.
Clodagh, tried to run but they caught her immediately, digging their nails into her arms painfully.
Nobody was coming to save her. She was trapped.
