The next day, at around 11am, I decide to tell Belly about Jere and me, she deserves to know.

I knock on her bedroom door.

"Morning, Belly."

"Hey." She sits up.

I take a deep breath and sit on her bed.

"Can I talk to you about something?"

"Sure, what?"

I try to think of the right words.

"So, me and Jeremiah were talking the other day,"

"Yeah, I noticed you guys were good with each other."

"Yes, and uh, one thing led to another and he asked me to marry him."

Her mouth drops and her eyes widen.

"And you said?"

"Yes."

"Oh, really?"

"Yes, you don't sound like you approve."

"He cheated on you, y/n, why did you say yes?"

"What do you mean?"

This reaction from her is so different to any before, it's not like Belly to be so unsupportive.

"I just, I didn't think you'd be the kind of person to go back to someone like that."

"I mean, I didn't think I was, but then when he talks to me, he gives me a feeling only he can, and I just, I say yes."

"Okay but is this a happy, enthusiastic feeling or is it you being manipulated by him so badly that he makes you think everything's fine, even though deep down you know it's not feeling."

"What the fuck?"

"Y/N, I'm just being honest because you're my sister and I love you, but don't you think Jeremiah is a little manipulative?"

"No! No! Of course he isn't he's sweet and it shows."

"It shows to you."

"You know what," I stand up. "I'm not doing this with you anymore."

I slam her door and head back to my room, where Jere is, still asleep.

Later that day I have shift at a nearby diner, i work from 4-10pm, and when I get home, Jere is waiting in the kitchen on his phone.

"Hey, how was work?"

"It was fine." I sit next to him.

"Here's your dinner." He passes me a plate of food that my Mom had cooked earlier.

"I don't want it, not hungry," I kiss his cheek quickly. "Can we head to bed? I'm so tired."

He agrees and we go upstairs together.

It doesn't take long for him to fall asleep, but of course, I'm not like that.

I set my alarm for 6am.

Tomorrow is Susannah's garden dedication, and I have to see everyone again, everyone.

I haven't seen Conrad for years.

Maybe he won't even come, maybe he can't, or doesn't want to

I toss and turn thinking about it, why am I so shaken by this?
