Hogwarts train station 1993 the 1st of September

-

The two stood on the Hogwarts train platform, waiting for the train to arrive, Calliope rolled her eyes at Severus's disgruntled expression.

"Stop being grumpy, Severus," she said. "We were sent here to chaperone. Lighten up." He grumbled in response, rubbing his temples in irritation.

"I can feel it in my bones," he grumbled. "They're up to something, these students." I chuckled and remarked, 'They're just 11— innocent.'"

Severus let out a low scoff, his irritation flaring at your statement.

"Innocents?" he retorted, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "I've been teaching at Hogwarts for a long time, and let me tell you, even eleven-year-olds can be up to no good." I walked towards the arriving train, 'It looks like you're letting those 11-year-olds boss you around.'"

Severus huffed at her remark, his pride visibly wounded.

"Let them boss me around? Hardly," he retorted; his voice edged with a hint of indignation. "I have a certain authority as a teacher. They may push the boundaries, but I keep them in check." With a scowl, he followed you towards the train, still bristling from your teasing comment

Severus settled into his seat; the compartment now filled with an unusual silence. You were engrossed in your book, quietly turning the pages, interested in the story.

For a while, he sat silently, his expression distant yet preoccupied. As you continued reading, oblivious to his inner turmoil, he finally broke the silence, starting a sentence softly.

"May I ask something of you?" His voice was low and measured

I closed my book slowly, gently placing it on my lap. I nodded curtly and smiled, "Yes, you may."

Severus swallowed hard, his throat suddenly dry. His eyes darted briefly to meet yours before returning to the floor.

"Why..." he began again, his voice hoarse with vulnerability, "Why did you forgive me so quickly? I expected you to distance yourself... to keep your guard up, but you didn't."

His fingers tapped nervously against the armrest of the seat, his thoughts swirling with confusion and uncertainty. "Why didn't you just let me... push you away?"

Calliope's gentle smile softened further as she met Severus's gaze. understanding passed through her eyes as she spoke, her voice earnest.

"Severus," she began softly, "I forgave you because I believe in second chances. We all make mistakes, and holding grudges only eats us from the inside out."

She paused for a moment, choosing her words carefully. "As for keeping my guard up, I trust my instincts. I feel... a certain connection with you"

Severus was taken aback by her words, his eyebrows knitting together, with mixtures of surprise and wonder. The idea that there was a connection between them ...

A deep silence fell over the compartment as he absorbed her confession. His thoughts whirled, a tangle of emotions and thoughts he couldn't quite untangle.

"Connection...?" he echoed, his voice barely above a whisper, his eyes darting back to hers, searching for any signs of deception, yet finding none.

Calliope could see the surprise and confusion in Severus's eyes and chose her words carefully, not wanting to confess...

"Yes, a connection,"   "We've been working alongside each other for quite some time now. There's an understanding and a shared experience between us. It goes beyond mere respect or professional."

She paused, her gaze holding his for a moment longer, a small, warm smile playing at the corners of her lips. "And I find that connection... comforting."

Severus nodded silently in response, his gaze drifting out the window as he absorbed her words. The vast scenery outside blurred into a mosaic of colors as he allowed himself a moment of introspection.

Comfort.

That was a rare feeling for Severus, given the complexities of his life. The fact that he could find any ounce of comfort in this connection with her stirred something within him.

Minutes later, they heard screams echoing down the row. They swiftly got up, running out of the compartment with wands at the ready. My face turned surprised as I saw a man I hadn't seen before offering a scared Harry Potter some chocolate.

"Lupin," Severus said, his voice filled with anger and disapproval.

Severus's jaw clenched, his eyes narrowing as they settled on the man standing before them - Remus Lupin. The animosity between them was palpable, their history fraught.

"What are you doing here, Lupin?" Severus demanded; his tone sharp as a dagger.

"Ah, they must have informed you, Snape, that I'll be taking over as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher," Lupin said amiably, a gentle smile playing on his lips, while Severus let out an audible sigh.

Lupin turned towards me, a faint grin softening his features. "It seems we haven't been introduced. Remus Lupin," he greeted, extending his hand for a handshake.

"Calliope Foxx, Hogwarts librarian," I replied warmly, shaking his hand as he nodded in acknowledgment.

"Nice to meet you, Calliope. Please, call me Remus," he offered with a friendly smile.

Glancing back, I noticed Severus had already departed.

After bidding Remus farewell, I returned to our compartment. As I entered, I found Severus looking decidedly displeased.

He sat in the corner, his arms folded across his chest, and a furrow etched across his brow.

Severus's eyes flicked up as she entered, his annoyance evident. "Lupin," he grumbled, the name sounding like a swear word on his lips.

"Didn't he seem quite nice to you?" I queried.

Severus's expression soured further as she mentioned Lupin's supposed niceness. He let out a huff, his eyes narrowing.

"Nice?" he repeated, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Lupin may appear nice on the surface, but don't be fooled. He's not to be trusted
