Chapter 9

RIley's POV

"Hey Maya?" I said without thinking first.

"Yes?"

..Great there's no going back now..

"Why are you starving yourself?" I ask.

Maya's POV

I look down at my shoes and don't say anything for a minute.

"I don't know what your talking about." I said to my shoes instead of Riley.

"Maya, best friends can tell each other anything. Tell me what's going on." Riley says in a serious tone.

I feel my eyes getting glossy.

..No, don't cry. You're stronger than that Hart..

But what I said in my head just made my tears roll down my cheeks.

..I'm not strong, am I. Ugh, I don't want to tell Riley. I don't want sympathy. I don't want any of that shit. Oh great, I'm cussing again..

I get snapped out of my thoughts when Riley lifts my head. She saw my tears and wipes them away with her sleeve.

"Please tell me." Riley begs.

Another tear rolls down my cheek as I gather up my courage and say "Y-you know how my mom is always working?"

"Yeah, what about it?"

"Well, she doesn't come home until late at night and she's never home when I wake up. She already left to go work so I'm left with no food for breakfast and dinner. Sometimes I buy lunch at school but I don't have that much money so I don't eat at all."

"Maya, how long has this been going on?"

"I don't know, maybe a month or two."

Riley stays silent for a minute. "You know what, I'm going to help you through this. In the morning, you can come over to my house to eat breakfast then we can take the subway to school together. At school, I'll pay for lunch. And in the evening, you can come over to my house to eat dinner. Oh and just text me when you're mom brings food home because you're mom would never leave you to starve."

..Great. Sympathy..

"Uh, are you sure your parents will be okay with it Riles? Are you going to tell them that I've been starving myself?"

"Of course they'll be okay with it, they love you. And you'll be with me when I tell them. Sounds good?"

I give Riley a genuine smile and said "Sounds good. Thank you Riley, this is why you're my best friend."

"No problem." Riley said as she pulled me into a hug.

Riley's POV

When we pulled out of the hug, the subway came. When we were walking inside I kept thinking about how I should've told her about my cuts.

..Maybe I can tell her in the subway..

When we got inside the subway, we held onto a pole. Just when the door were about to close, I saw someone run inside the subway and was running toward the subway door Maya and I were on.

"Hey, is that Lucas?" I hear Maya say and before I know it, I rushing toward the subway door, and holding it open right before it closed. Then he jumps in right before the subway starts to move.

"Thank you Riley." Lucas said out of breath. "You almost got you fingers crushed trying to help me."

"It was nothing, really." I said then held onto the pole Maya was holding on to.

"Hey Maya." Lucas said with a smile as he took a seat.

"Hey Ranger Rick, I see that you're running a little today. You couldn't get your horse out of the stables to use as a transportation to school could you?" Maya said with a smirk and I punched her on the shoulder.

A few minutes later we got to our stop and the three of us headed to school.

..I hope today will be a good day..
