Broken Hearted

Chapter 16

Lucas' POV

I woke up to my alarm at 5: 30am. Thankfully, I remembered to put my phone underneath my pillow so that Riley wouldn't hear the sound of the alarm. My princess needs her beauty sleep.

I stood up, folded the blankets, and tiptoed to Riley's desk. I tried to find some post-its and a pen but it was too dark for me to see anything. I took out my phone and used the flashlight app to find what I needed to write a note just in case someone thinks that I disappeared. Once I found them I wrote:

Left to go to my apartment to get clothes and things that I need for school today. I'll be back real soon! -Lucas

I placed the note on top of the neatly folded blankets, then tiptoed to the bay window. Praying that the window wouldn't creak open or that I wouldn't accidentally open it too fast causing it to slam, I put my hands on the handles and opened it as carefully as I could. When I finally got the window open (which felt like years considering how careful I was not to make a sound) I looked over at my princess who was sound asleep, smiled, and crawled outside the window.

I was so careful not to make any sounds while I was awake so that Riley wouldn't wake up. I let my guard down JUST ONCE while crawling out the window because I hadn't made a peep since I had woken up. And what happens? Oh, I only lifted my head a second too soon, causing me to hit the top of the window, making a loud BANG sound.

"Shit," I said out loud, putting my hand on my head. I quickly put my hard over my mouth, realizing that I didn't whisper.

I got my whole body outside the window before checking if Riley had woken up. I'm so lucky that she only turned on her side.  

I closed the window, just as slowly as I opened it earlier, but not all the way so that I could get back in her room. Then I walked down the fire escape to the streets of New York. 

I took out my phone to check the time.

5:42am

The city was just waking up. The sun was starting to rise as the cars and taxis started to fill the streets. The vehicles weren't complete filling the streets yet. 5:42am is too early for honking and bumper to bumper traffic.

..So I have about 20 minutes. That's more than enough time for me to get in and out of my apartment and back at Riley's. I'm lucky that our apartments are only a few blocks away from each other..

By the time I got back to Riley's apartment, it was a little after 6am. I crawled back into her room, except more carefully this time. I tip-toed to Riley's bed and found her still sound asleep. A piece of hair was in her face, so I gently put it aside.

..She's Sleeping Beauty..

I smiled to myself, grabbed my computer, and tip-toed out of Riley's room.

"Good morning, Mrs. Mathews!" I said when I got to kitchen. "What's cookin'?"

"Scrambled eggs," Mrs. Mathews replied with a smile. "You're up early, oh and you changed clothes too,"

"Yeah, I woke up at 5:30 and went to my apartment to change clothes and some stuff for school,"

"5:30? You barely got 3 hours of sleep!"

"Don't worry about it, Mrs. Mathews. I'll take a nap after school,"

"Alrighty," Mrs.Mathew said with a laugh.

"Hey Mrs. Mathews, do you think I could print our me and Riley's paper for our presentation?"

"Of course, honey. The printer is in me and Mr. Mathews' room, the room right next to Riley's,"

"Is Mr. Mathews still sleeping? I'd hate to wake him up.."

"No, he's already awake. I think he's grading papers. If you have issues with the printer just ask him, he won't bite,"

"Okay," I said with a laugh. "Oh, one last question,"

"Yes?"

"What time should I wake up 'Sleeping Beauty?'"

Mrs. Mathews smiled. 

..I'm sure that she knows that I am quite fond of her daughter..

"6:30 if you want me to drive both of you to school," I hear Mrs. Mathews say, snapping me out of my thoughts. "Or 7 if you just want to take the subway,"

"I'll wake her up at 7, so that she has more time to sleep," I reply.

"You're always looking out for 'Sleeping Beauty', aren't you?" Mrs. Mathews asked with a smile.

"Of course. She is a princess, after all,"

I like how this chapter turned out.

But it's not that long of chapter.. sorry about that.

It was supposed to be longer but I wanted to publish this chapter asap.

Plus I'm kinda pooped from writing that really long author's note/summary. 

I promise that the next chapter WILL NOT take 5 months to publish.
