"I GOT IT!" JASON EXCLAIMED.
"Really—?"
With a bone-jarring thud, Jason and I hit the fountain, the cold stone unforgiving beneath us. But we were free, and in that instant, the pain was a small price to pay for our escape.
The impact left us breathless, sprawled in the empty fountain. I winced, feeling the bruises already forming, but Jason was already on his feet, offering me a hand. "Are you okay?" he asked, concern etched on his face.
I nodded, though my body ached. "We need to find Leo," I said, my voice steady despite the adrenaline still coursing through me.
Jason's jaw tightened. "You're right."
Suddenly, I spotted a plume of smoke rising in the distance. "Jason, look." I pointed.
"That has to be Leo." Jason nodded, his expression grim.
Jason clenched his fists, summoning the winds with a determined look. I felt the air swirl around us, lifting my hair. "Hold on," he said, reaching out and pulling me close.
I wrapped my arms around him for support.
I felt the winds swirl more intensely, lifting us off the ground. The marble fountain quickly shrank beneath us as we rose higher and higher. The cityscape spread out below, a patchwork of rooftops and streets. The sensation of flying was exhilarating, the wind rushing past us, carrying us swiftly into the sky.
Look, it would've been weird that Jason was holding me like that while we were alone, but we were on a quest and needed to save our stuff. Also, Jason's girlfriend was my best friend in the whole world and it was no secret that I had a crush on his best friend. All in all, it wasn't weird.
As we soared through the sky, the plume of smoke grew larger, guiding us like a beacon. The closer we got, the more distinct the sounds became—popping noises that could only mean one thing: Leo pulling some sort of trick.
"That's definitely him," Jason said, his voice filled with urgency.
I nodded, my heart pounding.
We descended swiftly, the city of Bologna sprawling beneath us. Through the haze of smoke, I spotted a familiar figure below.
"There he is!" I shouted.
Jason tightened his grip on me as we angled our descent.
Just then, thunder boomed. Lightning flashed, and the bars on the nearest window burst into sizzling, melted stubs of iron.
