I WASN'T VERY GOOD AT COMFORTING PEOPLE.
After the tunnel collapsed, Hazel wept. Her, Leo, and I were separated from the others by the debris. Hazel pounded her fists against the stones and yelled curses that would've earned her a mouth-washing with lye soap back during our time.
I wrapped by arms around her and told her it was going to be okay, but that was the most I could do.
Leo stared at us, wide-eyed and speechless.
"Sorry." She wiped her face.
"Hey, you know..." Leo shrugged. "I've attacked a few rocks in my day."
She swallowed. "Frank is... he's—"
"Listen," Leo said. "Frank Zhang has moves. He's probably gonna turn into a kangaroo and do some marsupial jujitsu on their ugly faces."
I helped Hazel up to her feet. "If it makes you feel any better, he's definitely alive. He's no where near the River Styx."
"Thanks," Hazel croaked.
I held onto her arm. "Frank will be okay, Hazel. I'll personally make sure we see him again, okay? I swear it on the Styx."
I knew I probably shouldn't continue swearing things on the Styx all willy-nilly, but I couldn't really help it. It felt like the only way to show my friends I really did care about them. It was my way of letting them know that I am willing to face terrible punishments for their sake.
"Sorry." Hazel straightened herself back up. "We should probably keep going."
Leo summoned fire into his hand. "Okay, which way, Miss Underground?"
Hazel scanned the path in front of us.
"That way." She pointed left. "It feels the most dangerous."
"Great," I muttered.
"I'm sold," said Leo.
We began our descent.
As soon as we reached the first archway, the polecat Gale found us.
She scurried up Hazel's side and curled around her neck, chittering crossly as if to say: Where have you been? You're late.
"Not the farting weasel again," Leo complained. "If that thing lets loose in close quarters like this, with my fire and all, we're gonna explode."
