𝐂𝐀𝐌𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐄

I LIKED THE GREAT OUTDOORS–but climbing a two-hundred-foot cliff on a stairway without rails, making sure Hazel with a bad-tempered weasel on her shoulder wouldn't fall? Not so much. Especially when I could have shadow traveled to the top in a matter of seconds.

I walked behind Hazel so he could catch her if she fell. I appreciated that Hazel trusted me, but I was nervous I wouldn't be able to shadow travel out of here quick enough. Due to it being a cliff, there were plenty of shadows, but it wasn't very dark considering it was the morning.

To be completely honest, my mind was preoccupied. After waking up beside Leo, I panicked. Look, things like that were looked down upon and forbidden when I was younger. I knew things were different now, but that didn't help much.

Before Hazel and I left, Leo gave me a look that seemed to say a thousand words at once. It was apologetic, reassuring, and admiring all fused together, making my heart skip a beat. I looked down at the ground nervously and left with Hazel.

I was taken out of my thoughts when Hazel's foot almost slipped, sending a spray of gravel over the edge. Gale squeaked in alarm.

"Are you all right?" I asked.

"Yes. Fine."

I glanced up. She couldn't see the thief from here, but I sensed he was waiting. I was confident Hazel could produce enough gems and gold to impress even the greediest robber.

Gale the weasel jumped off her shoulder and scampered ahead. She glanced back and barked eagerly.

"Going as fast as I can," Hazel muttered.

"Have you had any luck controlling the Mist yet?" I asked.

"No," Hazel admitted.

I had no doubt that Hazel would learn to control the Mist. I'd seen her determination and strength in the face of challenges that would break most people. There was a quiet resilience in her, a kind of inner fire that burned steadily, no matter how fierce the storm. She just needed time and confidence.

"You'll get it," I said convincingly.

"How can you be sure?" Hazel asked.

"Hecate wouldn't have picked you if she didn't believe you had power," I decided. "She could've picked Piper or I, but she picked you. I think she made a good decision."
