Song of the chapter:
I bet my life by Imagine Dragons

_________

An hour later, Ashton and I got into his Jeep (he insisted on driving) to go see how Ashley was doing in the ER at the hospital.

"So when you see her--" he hesitated. We were driving down the freeway in the slow lane because he drove so slow.

"What?" I looked at him expectantly. He had both hands on top of the steering wheel and was biting his lip.

"Well, she was in a car accident so she might look a little--messed up." He looked at me, and held his lips in a grim line.

I nodded slowly and exhaled. "Yeah, I know. I don't know how I'm going to react, but at least I know it might not be good."

"And you know that I am here for you." He set his right hand on/mine lightly which was in my lap.

I stared down at his hand and back up at him.

He quickly pulled his hand away, leaving a warm sensation on mine.

"Sorry." He muttered.

I didn't answer and just looked straight ahead at the road, pretty sure I was blushing. Hopefully, he didn't notice.

When we got in the hospital parkade, we quickly paid for parking and got to her room.

I stood outside Ashley's door where I couldn't see her, and took a couple of deep breaths. Ashton set his hand on my shoulder. "You alright?"

I nodded and closed my eyes.

"Do you want me to go in first?" He asked.

I nodded and opened my eyes, to watch his reaction when he went in there. When he did, he tensed up. I knew he was trying to hide it but I could still notice.

"Ashton?" I whispered.

He turned back to me, the color drained from his face and walked back out. "Let's go get you something to eat."

"Ashton, why?" I asked. He tried to steer me away from the door but I stood my ground.

"Let's just--" he grabbed my arm, above my elbow.

"No! I want to see her!" I yanked my arm out of his grasp.

"Are you sure?" He whispered.

"Yes. I can handle it." I walked into the room and looked at her.

I really wish I would have let Ashton drag me away from that door. My breath caught in my throat.

She was laying in the hospital bed lifelessly and was hooked up to a oxygen tank. Every part of her body was bandaged up or bruised. Her face had a huge cut running down the length of her face, from her temple to/right above her chin. The rest of her face was purple and black with bruises. And she did not open her eyes.

No. Not her. Why?

I ran out of there and down the hallway, with my head in my hands, bawling loudly.

"Hazel!" Ashton yelled. I could hear quick footsteps behind me which I guessed was him.

"Go away!" I yelled, through my sobbing.

"No. I am not going to leave you like this!" He said, sounding determined.

I dropped onto an empty bench and continued to cry. Ten seconds later I felt those familiar hands wrap around me and pull me close. "It's gonna be okay." He whispered.

"No it's not, Ashton. She's gonna--die!" That just made cry even harder.

He said nothing. Either he agreed me or he was just in shock because I just said that.

She's gonna die.
