Ashton hates me now. When we go home, he's never going to talk to me again. I thought.

Ashton drove in silence, and didn't glance my way once. I really wanted to apologize but was afraid that he'd yell at me. I felt so terrible about what I said but it was true. I didn't want to lie to him.

When Ashton drove past our street, I stared at him. He still didn't look at me.

We probably drove for another twenty minutes before he turned into a dirt/gravel parking lot and parked. As I looked out the passenger window, I saw a narrow dirt path that led down to the ocean. Despite the situation, I found myself smiling. The ocean was my favorite place in the world. It was so beautiful.

Ashton turned the Jeep off, and pulled his keys out of the ignition, sliding them into his pocket. Then he opened his door and got out.

I just sat there with my seatbelt still on, and stared at him.

Finally he glanced at me. "Are you getting out?" He asked.

I unclipped my seatbelt and got out.

Ashton went to the back of his Jeep and opened the hatchback. He took off his dress jacket and his tie. Then he unbuttoned the collar of his white button-up shirt and grabbed an afghan tribal printed blanket. Closing the hatchback, he came over and grabbed my hand.

"There's something I need to tell you." He said quietly. His voice cracked which meant that he was close to tears which also meant this was serious.

"What is it?" I asked. I made circular motions on his hand with my thumb, trying to comfort him.

"Let's walk down to the beach and then I'll tell you."

I nodded. We walked down to the narrow dirt path and a few leaves rustled around our feet. There was a slight breeze in the air, and my hair moved around my face lightly, like feathers.

Once we got down to the sand, which was a gorgeous golden brown, Ashton brought me down to the shoreline and spread out the blanket beside the water.

I stared out at the water and all was calm. A sailboat floated in the distance, only looking like a speck of dust. Two seagulls flew close over our heads, squawking at each other angrily.

Ashton sat down on the blanket and patted beside him, gesturing for me to sit. I plopped down beside him and he grabbed my hand closest to him, holding it between both of his and resting them on his lap.

There was a moment of silence, as he proceeded to gather his thoughts before he finally spoke.

"I became friends with this girl, her name was Rebekah, when I was in Year 6. We hung out together, almost everyday, before soon we were pretty much inseparable. When I was fifteen, I realized I was in love with her. I decided to tell her in hopes that she might feel the same." He swallowed slowly.
