I'm already dead, I just haven't figured out how to make it official yet.

The thought of my own death hung over me like a shadow. It was a fate that had been imposed upon me, and I couldn't escape it.

"You still didn't work on prophecy did you?" Cole asked throwing a paper ball at Justin, trying to annoy him and make me laugh.

I sighed, feeling the familiar feeling sadness wash over me.

"How are you holding up?" He asked empathically.

I felt like I was drowning in the depths of my own despair, struggling to keep my head above water. The more I tried to break free, the more I felt trapped in this endless cycle of hopelessness. It was like running in every possible direction to reach somewhere, just somewhere better than where my mind is trapped. But I kept reaching the same place over and over again.

It was a dead end for me.

"I'm fine." I told Cole, Justin looked at me with a questioning gaze.

"We'll find a way to save you, okay?" Cole assured, sounding uncertain himself.

"Justin, do you think we can discover some forgotten prince? Should I ask dad?" He asked.

"We can try." He looked away quickly, busying himself.

"Is he back?" Justin asked, referring to Cole's father. I've heard he's some big officer and one of the king's favorite.

"He'll be back this evening." Cole informed. "He has asked you to join us for dinner."

"I can't. I'll apologize personally. We can't really be wasting so much time." He grumbled.

He's been grim and irritable since our midnight escapade. Just when I had thought we might be getting along, he proved me completely wrong. That sweet Justin was gone and that made me even more sad for some reason.

The ache in my chest was palpable, as if I'd lost something precious, and I couldn't help but wonder what had happened to that tender soul.

What happened to that Justin?

"Bro, you know he doesn't call you without reason."

"And guess what?" He raised his eyebrows. "I don't care."

Both Cole and I were taken back from that reply. I couldn't help but snap at him.

"Justin! What is up with you!"

"Nothing?" He shrugged.

"Then stop acting like a prick. You're not the only one suffering!" I scolded him.

"Yeah.." He laughed humorlessly. "Of course I'm not the only one suffering. Very soon the whole world will suffer, you know why? Because of you!"

His words sliced through me like a razor-sharp blade. My heart recoiled in agony as I felt tears pricking at the corners of my eyes, threatening to spill over.
