"I-I-I-..." Enid's mind was spinning faster than the propellor of a giant helicopter, desperately trying to find a way to cover her tracks.
"I-I... I was, uh... referring to... something I read... o-or something..." it was quite obvious Enid was lying through her teeth, which was made even more obvious when she started backing up slightly, her expression screaming 'dear g-d she's going to kill me.
Wednesday watched Enid intently, taking in her panicked expression. She knew that her question had struck a nerve, and the stuttering and blushing were dead giveaways that Enid was feeling embarrassed and flustered.
"Enid." Wednesday took another step forward, her voice firm but not unkind.
"What does 'Ily' really mean?" Wednesday questioned, her brow rising.
Enid continued to stumble backwards, until her back hit the wall behind her, and she had no other way to escape. Her heart was pounding faster than it ever had in her whole life, and her face was as red as a tomato.
No matter how hard she tried, no words other than unintelligible stutters would leave her mouth, the fear of getting caught by Wednesday being too powerful for her.
Seeing that Enid was unable to speak, she took a different approach. Wednesday raised her hand and placed it gently on Enid's chin, tilting her head up so their eyes met.
Wednesday held Enid's gaze, her own intense and unyielding. "Enid. Look at me. Deep breaths."
Enid's heart skipped a beat when Wednesday put her hand against her chin, lifting her head to look her in the eyes. Her brain was basically short circuiting, unable to process the situation fully.
Enid took a moment to compose herself, taking deep breaths like Wednesday instructed, and after a few moments, she was slightly less of a nervous wreck, though she was still incredibly flustered.
Enid took a shaky breath, averting her gaze from Wednesday as she mumbled, "I-It's uh... it's short for I... love you..."
Each word was a struggle for Enid to get out, especially the last two, as she was terrified of how Wednesday would react. Her heart was about to beat out of her chest from how hard it was pumping.
Wednesday's heart skipped a beat, her eyes widening slightly at Enid's confession. She had not been expecting that confession so quickly.
Her grip loosening, her hand falling back to her waist. For a brief moment, Wednesday's expression was unreadable as her mind processed this what was happening, But then, she managed to calm her own racing heart.
"You...love me," Wednesday repeated, her tone neutral, hiding the storm of emotions inside.
Enid finally managed to force herself to look Wednesday in the eyes again, and she visibly flinched as she heard her repetition of Enid's confession.
She nodded in response, her voice shaky as she quietly spoke, "Y-Yeah... I-I do..." Her heart was still pounding in her chest at a million miles per hour, her nervousness now starting to change into anxiety and fear of how Wednesday would respond.
Wednesday stared into Enid's eyes, taking in her nervous and anxious expression. She could tell that this admission was a big deal for Enid, and knowing that Enid felt so deeply for her stirred something within her.
Wednesday took a deep breath, her mind racing as she tried to figure out what to say next. A large part of her wanted to stay.
"How...how long have you felt this way?" Wednesday asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
