The cap, gown, dress and heels that she wore proudly earlier that day was now replaced with a nice pair of jeans that hugged her hips very well. Her yellow t-shirt accented the vibe of the dancehall genre of music that was being played loudly down below.
Winded from the heavy dancing, Soriyah took a swig of water. Looking out into the sky above, which was dark, her eyes searching deep like there was something or someone, waiting for her, somewhere out there.
The laughter and music from the party filtered up through the night air, but up on the roof, it was quieter, more intimate.
She was alone, using the quiet silence to reflect on how her time at college was spent. Lost in thought, Soriyah thought about all the classes, the exams and the never ending drama that took place on campus.
And it made her smile.
Jada, Javonte and Derek were special to her. They always will be and when the thought came to mind about him, Soriyah scoffed and smiled some more at the thought of ever recognizing Derek as one of those people who made a difference in her life.
But before she could ponder more on it, the door swung open, Jada laughing loudly at the foolishness that was going on between Nico and Chris downstairs before coming outside to meet her.
"They so fucking stupid...Bitch it's hot as fuck down there, I'm 'bout to pass the fuck out!" Jada whined, her heels clicking loudly across the rooftop and Soriyah laughed, throwing her head back.
"Mhm, and I told 'yo drunk ass not to wear them damn heels tonight." Soriyah chuckled, waving her arms dramatically.
"Mmcht, I ain't that drunk, 'Riyah." Jada said, making her way towards Soriyah to sit with her on the ledge, but Soriyah held her hand up, stopping her halfway.
"Un uh, stay right there, I'm coming over to you, 'cause you already know how clumsy you are when you drink and I ain't finna have you falling off this damn roof." Soriyah warned, standing up to guide her best friend to a chair nearby. "If you broke your leg tonight, ya mama would have my ass on a platter."
"Hmm, you right," Jada giggled, settling down where Soriyah led her.
"Here." Soriyah said, handing over her bottle of water for Jada to hydrate with. Then she leaned back in her chair and blew a large sigh."Shiiit, what a day."
Jada chugged the water in one go, sighing loudly after she was done, which prompted both of them to stare at each other proudly.
"Fuck, I know." Jada said, "And that's the scary part for me... knowing that' it's only the beginning for us. Shit, It's gonna be my first year teaching a whole class by myself and I gotta see somebody about an apartment tomorrow."
"Exactly. Like... we're full fledged adults now, Jada. We're officially on our own."
"Bitch, 'yo parents ain't goin nowhere. They love you too much."
"I know," Soriyah laughed admittedly, "But still, you know what I mean."
"Mhm." She said, taking Soriyah in for a much needed hug. They embraced each other tightly, overwhelmed with excitement and relief, all at the same time.
Then they pulled away from each other when they heard the door swing open, Derek and Javonte laughing as they made their way outside.
"Heeey." Jada yelled over to them, exchanging a look with Javonte who seemed relieved as he smiled at his girlfriend.
