=====================

You and Lily had been inseparable ever since you met on the train to Hogwarts. Your bond was unbreakable despite your obvious differences in character. The pair of you were easily some of the most liked and popular students at Hogwarts and everyone knew that the two of you were a package deal.

The public knowledge of your closeness was thanks to instances like the time Lily shouted at a teacher in your defence. Or the time when you pushed a boy into the lake as he was about to needlessly jinx Lily.

Of course, by sixth year, the pair of you had also received your fair share of romantic attention. Though, many potential suitors quickly backed off from Lily, as James Potter seemed to have in it in his head that one day she would agree to his incessant attempts at getting her to go out with him. So in other words, she was basically off limits.

This just left you, though no one seemed to be able to get any further with you either. You always seemed to have an excuse to shut down their advances.

This fact made Remus Lupin feel totally and utterly hopeless. A feeling that reignited, as ever, whilst he watched you cross the grounds. He'd developed feelings for you quite some time ago. But they were feelings he could never act on.

Boys with much more confidence and charisma than him had asked you out and you'd shot them all down. You had even once shot down Sirius. So in his head what chance did he, Remus, stand?

Which is why he had resorted to pining and/or continuous looks of longing. At least we're friends, he would tell himself.

"I wouldn't bother mate" Sirius could be heard, piercing his thoughts. Remus looked over to his best friend. "That one's not gonna crack. Believe me. I tried" he announced, nodding in your direction. Remus felt a pinch of annoyance begin to bubble inside him. How could Sirius talk about you like you were some kind of challenge? He was supposed to be your friend too.

"I wasn't looking at her like that" Remus responded defensively. "I just remembered I was going to ask to borrow her telescope"

"Yeah... yeah" Sirius mumbled but he clearly wasn't paying any more attention to what Remus was saying. "Right. Well. Now I'm looking at her... and she does look extraordinarily good today. Yep. That's it. I'm gonna try again"

"You know what her answers gonna be, Padfoot" James spoke up. Sirius was already grinning and began to walk away.

"Doesn't stop you, does it?" he called back.

The three boys watched as the part-time dog ran to catch up with you. They couldn't hear what he was saying but you appeared to be laughing at whatever it was. Remus felt something a little stronger than annoyance bubble inside him at the sight. So he turned away.

Get over it, he told himself. She's not even yours. And she never will be.
