"Samantha, go and bring the holy basil leaves from the storage," said Alex. Alex and I were running some tests with the herbs for the production of an herbal cough medicine. It has been a week since i joined here.
"Yes, sir," I replied.
I went to the storage where there was a large variety of herbs, neatly organized and labeled. I carefully picked the holy basil leaves, appreciating the subtle fragrance that wafted through the air. Holding the leaves, I walked back to the lab, feeling a mix of anticipation and nerves.
When I returned, Alex was setting up the equipment. His focus was intense, and I couldn't help but admire his dedication. He looked up as I entered, and our eyes met for a brief moment.
"Here are the basil leaves," I said, handing them to him.
He took the leaves from me, and our fingers brushed, sending a jolt of electricity up my arm. I quickly pulled my hand back, hoping he hadn't noticed my reaction.
Alex started preparing the leaves for the extraction process, and I watched closely, eager to learn. "You have to be very precise with the measurements," he explained, his tone instructive yet patient. "Too much or too little can alter the effectiveness of the medicine."
I nodded, absorbing his words. "I understand. I'll make sure to be careful."
As we worked side by side, I found myself increasingly aware of Alex's presence. His confidence and expertise were magnetic, drawing me in. Despite his serious demeanor, there were moments when he would glance at me, his eyes softening just a fraction.
"So, you are married?" he asked in his dominating voice. "To be honest, you don't look married," he added, stepping closer. A bit too close, as I could smell his expensive cologne. He bent down slightly, bringing his face near mine, leaving only a small distance between our lips. If he moved even a fraction closer, our lips would touch. He looked directly into my eyes, scrutinizing me as if to discern the truth.
"Yes, sir, I am married, as you see," I replied, avoiding his gaze. "That's why I'm working here."
"I haven't seen your husband ever coming to pick you up from work since you started," he remarked, his voice carrying a hint of suspicion.
"I... I... Sir, he is quite busy with his work," I hesitantly explained. "He is in overseas and won't return anytime soon."
He nodded at my answer and turned back to continue testing the leaves. I didn't fail to notice the brief flicker of anger on his face when I mentioned my supposed husband.
I placed my hand over my heart, which was beating rapidly due to his proximity.
For the rest of the day, I found it difficult to concentrate. I could feel Alex's piercing gaze on me whenever we were together. His intense scrutiny and commanding presence left me on edge, making every interaction feel charged with unspoken tension. As we worked on the herbal formulas, he would occasionally lean in closer than necessary to check my progress, his breath lingering on my skin.
"Keep the measurements precise," he instructed sharply, his voice close to my ear. "We can't afford mistakes."
His proximity unnerved me, yet I couldn't deny the undercurrent of attraction that simmered beneath the surface. His dominance was undeniable, and it both intimidated and intrigued me.
As the day drew to a close, I finished my tasks and prepared to leave. Alex was still engrossed in his work, his focus unwavering. I gathered my belongings and quietly exited the lab, grateful for the respite from his intense presence.
Walking home, I reflected on the day's events. Working closely with Alex was proving to be more challenging than I had anticipated, both professionally and personally. His dominance and intensity were unsettling, yet there was an undeniable magnetism that drew me in.
Reaching home, I decided to call Sia. I needed her support and guidance more than ever. As the phone rang, I took a deep breath, ready to confide in her about the complexities of my new job and the man who was at the center of it all.
The challenges ahead were daunting, but I was determined to navigate them with resilience and integrity. Little did I know, my journey at Sterling's Herbal Company was just beginning, and the path would be filled with unexpected twists and turns.
