"What?" I asked in disbelief. "Are you serious, or are you just?"
Karan cut me off as he stepped closer. "Do you remember that after that night, I took you to the hospital?" Of course, I remembered. That boy had taken me to the hospital and even dropped me back at the orphanage.
"And after that, I took you back to the orphanage," Karan continued as he sat down beside me.
So it was Karan. Karan was the boy who had saved me that night, the one I never got the chance to thank. A rush of emotions overwhelmed me as I nodded slowly, tears blurring my vision. "Thank you, Karan, for saving me."
Karan smiled gently. "No need for thanks, Aarini. That was years ago."
"Yes," I whispered, "but today, the laughter of those men reopened wounds I thought had healed."
Dr. Sania approached and placed a comforting hand on my shoulder. "Aarini, you need to avoid such situations from now on," she advised, pulling out a notepad and pen from her bag to write a prescription.
"These are some medications for you." She handed the prescription to Vedant.
Dr. Sania turned to me, her expression serious yet kind. "Don't go out alone at night, or these attacks might come back." I nodded in agreement, understanding the gravity of her words.
She smiled reassuringly and left the room with her bag in hand.
Vedant folded the prescription and looked at Karan with gratitude. "Thank you, Karan, for saving my sister. If I ever get the chance, I'll repay this debt." His words struck a chord deep within me. Despite everything, I felt incredibly fortunate to have Vedant as my brother. Even though we weren't related by blood, he treated me as if I were his own sister. He never shirked his responsibilities, and I couldn't help but feel that Vedant's words had lightened the burden of gratitude I had been carrying for so long.
"What are you talking about, Vedant? She's my friend now too," Karan said with a warm smile as he stood up and walked over to Vedant.
"Are you okay?" Navya's voice pulled me from my thoughts. She was walking toward me, concern etched on her face.
I nodded, a little more firmly this time.
Navya wrapped her arms around me, and Riya joined us, pulling me into a comforting embrace.
Finally, everything felt right again. The weight on my heart had lifted. Today, I realized I wasn't alone in carrying my pain. I had friends, I had family, and somehow, that made all the difference.
