The sound of the phone ringing woke me up. Feeling a bit disoriented, I sat up in bed. After taking a moment to collect myself, I reached for the phone on the side table and answered the call.

"Hello, Miss Aarini, I've been trying to reach you for some time now, but it seems I couldn't get through," Suman's voice held a slight sense of urgency. Her sudden calls always felt a bit unsettling, but I knew she only reached out when something important came up.

"Hmm, Suman, tell me, what did you need to talk about?" I asked, my voice still heavy with sleep as I got out of bed and made my way to the closet.

"Mahak got hurt yesterday. I just wanted to inform you," Suman said from the other end of the line.

Hearing that, I felt a pang of worry surge through me. "What? Is Mahak okay?" I asked, stepping into the closet as concern tightened in my chest.

"Yes, she's fine now. She just wants to see you. If you're free, you should come and visit her."

"Yes, Miss Suman, I'll come tomorrow to meet her," I replied, ending the call and tossing the phone onto the bed before disappearing into the closet.

I was halfway through breakfast, scrolling through messages I barely cared about when Aarini entered the room, her presence drawing my focus. She sat down beside me, casually asking Nancy to serve her breakfast. My eyes lingered on her for a second, and I couldn't help but ask, "Why are you up so early?"

Her face remained buried in her phone, not even a glance my way.

"What do you mean? Should I wait until college is over to get up?" Her response came off indifferent, her attention still locked onto that damned screen.

A smirk tugged at the corner of my lips, but deep down, irritation stirred. "So, now you've started talking back, huh?" I took another sip of juice, watching her every move.

Her mockery came quick, her voice mimicking my own, "My responses are always straight, it's people's twisted minds that are the problem." She was teasing me, her voice dripping with playful sarcasm.

I couldn't help but chuckle at her attempt to mock me. But the moment I looked back at her phone, that brief smile vanished. For a while now, I had been trying to talk to her, but all her attention was glued to the screen. The sight of her so absorbed in that device only intensified the growing frustration within me.
