Munin woke up to several cracks akin to the sound of gunshots, and a moment later, the sound of the bullet whizzing through the air and smashing into a tree somewhere.deeper into the forest. That wasn't exactly something new, waking up by getting shot at was pretty common on the Northern front, but was still an irritating surprise. He was still confused, since they sounded rather off. The pitch and crispness of the sound was not within the range of modern weapons, and even through the range, he could tell it wasn't some Caerulean rifle. He stood up, his head still slightly spinning, and raised his gun, scanning the forest.
"Exodus!?" He asked, spinning around with his gun still raised.
"I'm right here, bro." Exodus said, poking his head out from the little tent that he had built for himself. "That was not me." His voice was much more serious than usual, so Munin knew something was up.
"Check the perimeter." Munin said simply, quickly popping meds and picking his gun back up and slowly advancing up the northern side of the clearing while Exodus took up the other side. It wasn't long before something happened. Munin heard Exodus curse and a spray of suppressed gunfire. He spun around to see Exodus standing there and a dead person lying halfway out of the bushes.
"Contact!" Exodus said, fire a few more rounds into the forest at something he couldn't see. Munin muttered something about bloody murder before flipping down his thermals in an attempt to see something to shoot at. After a moment, he saw what looked suspiciously like a human figure running through the foliage towards Exodus, and Munin, in true Peacekeeper fashion, shot it three times without hesitation. It was well outside the realm of reason civilians would be out here anyway.
"Visual ID!?" Munin asked, still looking around. Exodus yelled back a quick negative before continuing to scan the forest. Munin took a step forward, but stopped, spinning around at the sound of footsteps, barely dodging out of the way of a halberd. He kicked the soldier in the side, throwing off his balance as he tried to attack again. In this brief moment he grabbed his pistol from his hip and unloaded the full mag at 1200 rpm into his attacker.
"Knights!?" Exodus asked. "What the f*ck!?" Munin, who was coming back to his normal senses from that brief moment of almost automatic combat movements, looked over at the person he just killed. The man wore a chest plate that resembled late medieval armor, but wore a uniform similar to the [French?] during WW1. Odd. "Who the hell are we fighting!?" Exodus asked, firing a few more shots into the forest.
"Probably the same guys trying to kill us earlier!" Munin said. "F*ck!" He helped, an arrow lodging itself in his exosuit. "Raven, get the survey UAV in the air! We need eyes on them now!"
"I need the thermal pod, Munin," Raven replies, his avatar disappearing from the corner of his HUD, indicating that he had jumped platforms to the drone. Munin cursed, running over to the car and reaching into the open case of the drone and pulling out the phone sized thermal pod and attached the pod onto the rail on the underside of the drone. "Unit attached, beginning recon," he said monotonously as the UAV took off, and a moment later, the thermal display of his thermal sight on his visor's HUD was replaced with that of the drone. Now he could see everything.
"Exodus, 3 hostiles, eta 30 seconds, dead ahead." Munin said, pointing in the rough direction. Exodus nodded, gripping the grip on his rifle slightly tighter. The fore grip on the rifle was connected to the attachments via Bluetooth, and Exodus used it to accidentally turn on every single attachment on the rifle, including but not limited to: flashlight, laser, other laser, rangefinder, thermal scope, thermal spotlight, and another flashlight. Munim ignored his friend's antics, and just focused on the forest in the direction of the incoming hostiles. "Spread out. Keep your eyes open and your gun up." Munin said quietly as the sounds of footsteps crunching through the underbrush got louder. The two held their breath, with Munin taking a knee and raising one hand, holding up 5 fingers. 4... 3... 2...
