CHAPTER XXIX

Munin

"Firefight"

Current

2230 hours

Munin's eyes hurt from the strain. He knew that it's unhealthy to scope in for extended periods of time, and it would just end up making him tunnel vision. But right now, that was not exactly important. The targets they were engaged with were decently smarter than he expected. They didn't all push up as he hoped they would, and he was starting to realize that it was highly stupid of him to use explosive ordinance, since now these guys were scared and cautious.

"Watch ammunition." Munin muttered to Exodus. "Or at least just stop randomly shooting" Exodus sighed, sitting down again, pulling out the magazine and checking it.
"Yeah, alright, fine, fine."

By now it was fully night, and it was a pretty decent night too. Shafts of moonlight were filtering through the canopy of the forest, and the air was crisp and cool. If they weren't fighting for their lives right now, Munin might have taken a few photos. But life has this wonderful quality of being perfect when you're expecting it to be horrible, and being absolutely horrible when you're prepared for an easy existence.

Oh well.

Exodus rubbed his eyes, yawning, having given up any attempt of hiding his fatigue. Munin could feel himself getting tired, but it was ignorable for now. Under normal circumstances, they wouldn't have cornered themselves against a literal rock wall, but then again, they didn't know there'd be hostiles this close by.

But as time slowly went by, Munin was starting to realize that they were trying to just wait them out.

"Some welcome." Exodus muttered, half asleep. "Don't even have cake." Munin looked over at his friend, raising an eyebrow.

"The f*ck?" He asked, jabbing Exodus with his elbow. "Wake up." He added, albeit slightly more irritably.

"5 more minutes Hugin..." Exodus slurred out. Munin gave him a look somewhere between an annoyed deadpan and a thousand yard stare.

"She's dead, idiot." He muttered, elbowing Exodus harder in the ribs. His friend jolted awake, glaring at Munin.

"Why are you so violent? I was just resting my eyes." Munin rolled his eyes, scoping back in to his rifle, his non-verbal iteration of "shut the f*ck up and focus".

"You're lucky." He deadpanned. "I just shot Eclipse last time." Exodus sighed, shaking his head. The two just silently went back to waiting.

And waiting.

And waiting.

...This sucks.

They sat there for a few more minutes, before Munin basically surrendered all attempts of staying awake on his own and just popped another pill.

"Give me one." Exodus muttered, yawning again.

"No, these are way too strong for you. Just drink coffee." Munin said, throwing him a packet of coffee.

"What am I supposed to do with this? Consume pure coffee powder?" Exodus muttered. "Do you see hot water around here?" Munin said nothing, giving exodus a bottle.

"Dehydrated water." Munin said dryly. "Just add water."

"F*ck you."

"Die."

"Do you just carry that around with you?"

"What do you think?"

"Yes."
