was i the only kid

that begged their parents to do the dishes?

i was so desperate for some glimpse into adulthood

until the dishes became a daily chore

and i regretted ever asking.

you aren't aware that adulthood is in the reflection of the spoon

you've been asked to meticulously polish

until it's right there in front of you

and you're moving boxes with your mother

to prepare for college.

yesterday

you turned the TV on

and tuned into the streamer that you used to watch

every day

sitting in bed during quarantine

while the world slowly smoldered

outside your window.

instead of watching like you used to, your mind wanders

to the worry that you won't have enough money

to afford your textbooks this semester.

the sinews of your life

have snapped and

began to contort themselves

trying to mold into something

entirely foreign and new.

they must

fight against their own molecules

to survive.

nothing will ever be the same

as it was.
