Chapter 27: KITCHEN KISSES

Why would you say that? Is there something I should know?

Sasha:
I can't explain it here. It's not safe.

Hindi ko namalayang nginangatngat ko na pala ang kuko ko while staring at my conversation with Sasha. Pabagsak akong naupo sa gilid ng kama.

Does Sasha know something? Paano? How could she possibly know that everything that happened wasn't an accident?

I didn't even know if she was aware of what's currently happening in my life. Maybe she's heard rumors about it because I've been absent from my classes for weeks and missing from social events. Or maybe it's because the news reported the incident from the night we were ambushed?

I wouldn't know since the TV in my room isn't working. Dominic said it was to keep me from worrying or stressing over what I might see in the media.

I read her reply again.

It's not safe.

Wait—has something bad happened to her too?

I was about to reply to her message when I suddenly remembered I shouldn't make a decision impulsively. I need to think carefully about this.

I can't just meet her. If it's not safe to talk in chat, is it even safe to meet? I felt a sense of unease wash over me as I thought about the risks involved.

I don't even know kung nasaang parte kami ngayon ng Pilipinas. How can I meet her? We're probably hundred of miles away from the city.

But what if Sasha really knows something, and she's in danger? Even though our friendship isn't perfect, I still care about her.

Minutes passed as I sat there, frozen in place, lost in my thoughts, unsure of what to do next.

I turned my attention back to my phone when Sasha replied again:

Please, let's meet, Mia.

Napabuga ako ng malalim na hininga sa nabasa, tinitimbang ang bigat ng sitwasyong kinakaharap. Should I tell Dominic about this? I should, right? I need to inform him before taking any action. Mas alam niya kung ano ang dapat na gawin.

Dominic and Emerson didn't leave the office for the rest of the day. Sinubukan ko silang hintayin na matapos, but they seemed deeply absorbed in their work. Napagdeisyunan ko na lang bukas ng umaga ko na lang sa kanila sasabihin ang tungkol sa message sa akin ni Sasha. I woke up early the next day and immediately looked for Dominic, but the security guard assigned to me said that Dominic had gone out to check the premises.

I decided to head straight to the kitchen while waiting for them to return. When I got there, I found Aling Ponsing busy preparing meals for our security personnel. She was surprised to see me, likely because I had come down so early—so early, in fact, naunahan ko pa siyang bumaba kaysa mahatiran ako ng pagkain sa taas. She immediately asked what I wanted to eat.

"Please, continue what you're doing. I'm sure the security needs their food more than I do," I said, offering a reassuring smile. "I'll just make something for myself until you're free."

She insisted once more on preparing my breakfast, but I reassured her again that it was really fine. Finally, she agreed and left the kitchen upang hatiran ng pagkain ang mga security.

I started preparing my coffee and suddenly craved pancakes. I figured making them myself would give Aling Ponsing some time to rest after finishing her tasks.

Thankfully, Mana Senya had taught me how to cook a few things, so I felt confident enough that I could make something edible for myself.

I pushed up on my tiptoes, trying to snag the canister on the shelf second from the top. My brow furrowed in frustration when I couldn't reach it. Damn, sometimes I really hate my height.
