As the hours ticked by, the new alliance between the Horizon Shadow Class and Lucas’s group grew stronger. They spent the night fortifying their base, securing classrooms, and setting traps in the hallways. The school had become their fortress, and together, they were determined to defend it.
The cafeteria, now the heart of their operation, buzzed with activity. Maps were spread out on the tables, marking the safe zones and areas still crawling with zombies. The two groups had split into smaller teams to cover more ground. Shenny and Shamir were at the center of it all, coordinating efforts with Lucas and his right-hand, a sharp-eyed girl named Mia.
“Okay, team,” Shenny said, pointing to the map. “We need to clear out the science wing next. It’s full of supplies that we could use, but it’s also one of the most dangerous areas.”
“Dangerous how?” asked Mia, leaning over the table.
“The place is crawling with zombies,” Shamir explained. “But if we can get in and out quickly, we’ll be able to stock up on medical supplies, and maybe even find some useful chemicals to use against the undead.”
“Sounds risky,” Lucas said, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. “But it’s worth a shot. Who’s going in?”
“I’ll go,” Shenny volunteered without hesitation. “Shamir, Daryl, and Evagellina, you’re with me.”
“I guess that means I’m staying behind to hold down the fort,” said Ransyam, feigning disappointment. “But don’t worry, I’ll keep these guys in line.”
“We’ll be counting on you,” Shamir replied with a grin. “Just make sure the place doesn’t fall apart while we’re gone.”
“Don’t worry, I’ve got this,” Ransyam assured, giving a thumbs up.
As the group prepared to leave, the atmosphere in the cafeteria shifted. The casual banter quieted down, and everyone focused on the task at hand. They knew this mission was critical, and any mistake could cost them dearly.
Before they set out, Lorenda stepped forward. “Be careful out there,” she said, her voice tinged with concern. “We’ve made it this far. Let’s make sure we all get back safely.”
“We will,” Shenny promised, gripping her makeshift spear tightly. “We’re going to clear that wing and come back with everything we need. Just keep the place secure until we return.”
With a nod of agreement, the group gathered their gear and headed toward the science wing. The hallways were eerily silent, the sound of their footsteps echoing off the walls. The school, once filled with the lively chatter of students, now felt like a tomb.
As they reached the entrance to the science wing, Shenny motioned for everyone to stop. She peered around the corner and saw the hallway ahead was blocked by debris, but she could hear the unmistakable sound of shuffling feet.
“There’s definitely a group of them up ahead,” Shenny whispered. “We’ll need to move quickly and quietly.”
“Got it,” Daryl replied, gripping his weapon—a sturdy metal pipe—ready for action.
The team moved forward with caution, slipping through the narrow gaps in the debris. They navigated around overturned desks and broken lockers, the tension in the air thick enough to cut with a knife.
Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from behind them, causing everyone to freeze. Shenny turned, her heart pounding in her chest, only to see that a broken piece of ceiling tile had fallen.
“False alarm,” she said, exhaling a shaky breath. “Let’s keep moving.”
They continued down the corridor, finally reaching the door to the science lab. Shenny motioned for Shamir to check it, and he carefully turned the handle. The door creaked open, revealing a dark, cluttered room.
The smell hit them first—an acrid, chemical odor mixed with the stench of decay. The lab had been ransacked, and broken glass littered the floor. But among the chaos, they could see shelves lined with untouched supplies.
“We hit the jackpot,” Daryl said, breaking the silence.
“Not so fast,” Evagellina whispered, pointing to the back of the room where a figure lurked in the shadows.
It was a lone zombie, its back turned to them, seemingly unaware of their presence. The creature was hunched over, its movements slow and erratic.
Shenny held up a hand, signaling for the group to stay back. She crept forward, her spear at the ready. In one swift motion, she drove the weapon into the zombie’s head, the creature collapsing to the floor without a sound.
“Clear,” she said, pulling the spear free and wiping it on her sleeve.
The group quickly spread out, gathering supplies and stuffing them into their backpacks. As they worked, the tension slowly eased, replaced by a sense of accomplishment.
“Look at this,” Shamir said, holding up a box of medical supplies. “This stuff is gold.”
“And I’ve found some chemicals that could come in handy,” Evagellina added, carefully placing bottles into her bag. “We might be able to rig up some kind of explosive or at least something to slow the zombies down.”
The group worked quickly, but as they were finishing up, a loud bang echoed through the school. The sound of breaking glass and splintering wood sent a chill down their spines.
“That didn’t sound good,” Daryl muttered, his grip tightening on the metal pipe.
“We need to get back to the others,” Shenny said, slinging her backpack over her shoulder. “Now.”
They hurried out of the lab, moving through the hallways with renewed urgency. As they approached the cafeteria, they could hear the commotion—shouting, the sound of heavy furniture being dragged, and the unmistakable groans of zombies.
Bursting through the cafeteria doors, they found the room in chaos. Lucas’s group had been holding off a horde of zombies that had broken through one of the barricaded windows.
“Where have you guys been?” Lucas shouted over the noise, swinging his bat at an approaching zombie.
“Getting supplies,” Shenny replied, joining the fray. “We didn’t think the place would go to hell while we were gone.”
The battle was intense, but with the combined strength of both groups, they managed to push the zombies back and re-secure the cafeteria. By the time the last of the undead had been dealt with, everyone was exhausted but relieved.
“That was close,” Mia said, panting as she leaned against a table.
“Too close,” Shamir agreed, wiping sweat from his brow. “We need to reinforce those barricades—make sure this doesn’t happen again.”
As the group set to work, Shenny glanced around at her classmates and their new allies. They had faced down another wave of terror, but they were still standing. The school was still theirs.
For now.
But even as they reinforced the walls and secured their stronghold, a sense of unease lingered in the air. The zombies were relentless, and each attack seemed more coordinated than the last.
As the group finally settled in for a brief rest, Evagellina broke the silence with a tired smile. “You know, considering everything, I’d say we make a pretty good team.”
“Yeah,” Daryl agreed, grinning despite the exhaustion. “Maybe we should start a zombie-fighting club or something.”
“I’ll pass,” Shenny replied with a chuckle. “But I’ll keep the option open if this becomes a regular thing.”
“I think we’ve all had enough ‘regular’ to last a lifetime,” Ransyam added, earning a round of weary laughter from the group.
As the night wore on, the laughter slowly faded into the background hum of conversation. They had survived another night, but the battle was far from over.
And as they drifted into a restless sleep, they knew that tomorrow would bring new challenges. But whatever came their way, they would face it together—united, strong, and ready to fight.
Because they were the Horizon Shadow Class, and they weren’t going down without a fight.
