It was a sunny afternoon at Serenity Vale High School, and the Communication & Control (C&C) team was busy in their makeshift command center—a former computer lab now repurposed for their zombie apocalypse survival operations. Nigel, Alif, Faizah, and Ann Christy were huddled around a table cluttered with maps, radios, and old computer monitors.
Nigel leaned back in his chair, fingers flying over the keyboard. “Alright, let’s see if we can get the school’s old surveillance cameras working. If we can spot zombies before they get too close, we’ll be a step ahead.”
Alif was tinkering with a radio, trying to get a clear signal. “If this thing would just stop crackling, maybe we could pick up some survivor chatter. Or at least some good music.”
Faizah was reviewing their recent communications log, noting down important messages and requests from other teams. “We need to make sure we keep the team updated. Last time, Max almost ran into a zombie horde because he didn’t get the alert in time.”
Ann Christy meticulously arranged the maps, her glasses slipping down her nose. “Okay, I’ve marked the locations of all our current patrols. We need to ensure everyone’s on the same page about the safe zones.”
Nigel looked up from his screen with a smirk. “Hey Ann, you’ve got the whole library organized here. If we survive this apocalypse, you could open a tech and survival course.”
Ann Christy blushed slightly, her cheeks matching her glasses’ frames. “I just like to keep things neat. It helps with... well, everything really.”
Faizah glanced over her shoulder at Nigel’s screen. “Are those security camera feeds? They look like they’re from the cafeteria.”
Nigel nodded, still tapping away at the keyboard. “Yeah, but they’re not live yet. The system’s been acting up since we lost power last week. I’m trying to bypass some of the old coding.”
Alif, who had been fiddling with the radio, suddenly grinned. “Hey, I think I’ve got something! It’s a message, but it’s in static. Let’s see if we can clean it up.”
Ann Christy peered at the radio setup. “That’s great, Alif. Let me help with the signal processing.”
As Ann and Alif worked on the radio, Faizah turned her attention to a growing stack of papers. “I’m organizing the communication logs. Some of these messages are hilarious. Like this one from Shamir: ‘Help! I think the zombies are plotting against us!’”
Nigel chuckled. “Yeah, that sounds like Shamir. He’s always been a bit dramatic. Remember the time he thought the vending machine was haunted?”
Faizah laughed. “Oh, I remember that! He almost had us convinced the snack machine was a zombie conspiracy.”
Meanwhile, Ann Christy and Alif managed to clear up the radio static, revealing a garbled message. “This is... Ranger Team... need assistance... in the East Wing.”
Faizah looked up from the logs. “We’ve got to relay this to Max and the others. They’re in the East Wing, right?”
Nigel quickly patched into the intercom system. “Attention, all teams: Ranger Team has requested assistance in the East Wing. Max, make sure you’re prepared and head over there.”
Alif leaned back, rubbing his eyes. “Alright, that’s one problem solved. Now, if only we could figure out why the cafeteria’s security cameras keep showing the janitor’s closet.”
Ann Christy smiled. “Maybe the janitor’s closet is a hidden bunker we didn’t know about. You never know in this place.”
Faizah rolled her eyes playfully. “Yeah, and maybe the cafeteria’s secret menu is a stash of canned beans.”
Nigel laughed and took a sip from his coffee cup. “Hey, don’t knock it. Canned beans are a vital part of apocalypse cuisine.”
The team continued their work, balancing out their serious tasks with light-hearted banter. Despite the stress of their situation, their camaraderie and humor made their work in the command center enjoyable and effective.
Ann Christy looked around at her teammates and smiled. “You know, I think we make a pretty good team. Even if half of our solutions involve snack breaks and bad jokes.”
Nigel grinned. “Agreed. We might be stuck in a zombie apocalypse, but at least we’ve got each other—and a few good laughs.”
With their spirits high and their teamwork strong, the C&C team continued their work, ready to tackle whatever challenges the apocalypse threw their way next.
