( chapter thirteen, surviving the wilderness)

THE CAMPFIRE ROARS, it's flames growing bigger as Sadie throws another stick into the fire, watching with tired eyes as embers fly up from the campfire. She had placed decently sized rocks around it, hoping to mask the bright flames from any passerby's, or worse, raiders. It had been a couple hours since the dam, Sadie close to passing out as she watches over Troy, constantly checking his pulse after every minute passes.

It kept her from shutting her eyes, keeping her awake, keeping her alive. Sadie rubs her eyes, sighing as she grabs a stick from beside her, poking the fire to keep it burning. They had no food, no water, no medicine — she's reminded of the lack of food from the uncomfortable rumbling of her stomach, she was starving and Troy hasn't opened his eyes. Sadie leans over to him, lifting the bandage around his head slightly as she checks over the wound, the bleeding had stopped, dried blood crusted over the wound but not completely covering it.

It goes on like this for another couple of hours, her constantly checking on Troy, keeping the fire lit and her pretending that she wasn't starving. The last time she ate, that she can recall, was at the dam but it wasn't much. Not enough to fulfill her appetite for hours on end, especially with her now eating for two.
