The afternoon sun filters through the school's cafeteria windows as Grayson, Morgan, and I settle down at our table, our trays of hot food sitting in front of us. The buzz of conversation and the clatter of trays create a lively backdrop to our discussion.
"So, Emma's officially part of Cyberia now," Grayson says with a grin, taking a bite of his sandwich. "I guess she'll be the newest recruit to our digital squad. We should probably come up with a nickname—maybe 'The Rookie' or something."
Morgan laughs, her silver-gray eyes twinkling with amusement. "I think she'll do just fine once she gets the hang of things. She's enthusiastic and eager to learn."
Grayson leans back, casually tossing a chip into his mouth. "Sounds like it's going to be a blast. But we might run into a logistical problem."
I glance at him, curious. "What do you mean?"
Grayson grins. "We need another pod for the clubhouse. With Emma joining us, we're one short."
I give a thoughtful nod. "Yeah, you're right. If we all wanted to play at once, we wouldn't be able to. I'll check the school's basement and see if there are any extras lying around."
"When we were last down there, there were at least 7 or 8 of them just sitting there," Morgan chimes in. "Just text us in our group chat when you find one that works, preferably one that isn't under any junk," she adds with a smirk.
Grayson raises an eyebrow, a playful glint in his eye. "I'm coming with you. I'm not missing out on the adventure of finding a chair in the depths of the school basement."
Morgan chuckles, her eyes reflecting the warmth of the café's ambient light. "Good luck with that. Do me a favor: try not to get caught," she says with a half-smile.
Grayson's smirk widens as he adds, "Ah, the epic quest for the lost chair. Make sure to document your findings for posterity."
With a final chuckle from Morgan, Grayson and I head toward the school's basement, embarking on our "epic quest for the lost chair." The hallways are quiet in the late afternoon, their usual buzz of activity having faded. As we approach the basement entrance, the lighthearted spirit of our "adventure" adds a sense of playful anticipation to what might otherwise be a routine task.
"Shoot," I say, glancing at the doors. "They're closed. It looks like they finally shut them."
"You mean after your devastating stumble into them during orientation," Grayson says with a smirk.
"Yeah, yeah, so funny," I reply, giving him a playful shove.
I try to turn the handle on the doors but to no avail. "Well, how are we going to get in there?"
"You could always give me a repeat performance," he says with that familiar grin spreading across his face.
I ponder this thought for a second as I look around the vacant hallway. "There are classes in session, though," I say, glancing at one of the nearby doors filled with students. "It's going to be loud."
"Well, we better slide in the door quick then," he replies, looking around to make sure we are still alone. "Do it."
I take a step back, glancing at the heavy metal door. I take a deep breath, preparing myself for the weight of the metal monstrosity. With one final breath, I charge into the right door. A bang followed by the accompanying creaking sound echoes through the long hallway.
The storage room has a dim and eerie atmosphere, as overhead lights flicker and cast unsettling shadows over the forgotten equipment and supplies. The air is heavy with the musty scent of mildew and dust, and with each step, tiny particles swirl around us. The walls, once white, are now a patchwork of grime and faded posters, with peeling edges hinting at long-forgotten school events.
