"I...I love you..." Piper murmured as you danced together under the slowly flashing disco ball, with romantic music playing.

"Wh-what?" You stammered. "I..."

"Look, you don't have to answer me right now. But..." Piper looked into your eyes.

"Look, Piper, the truth is...I'm not looking for anyone...or anything right now," You told her. "So...I'm really sorry, but no."

"Oh...uh...o-okay..." Piper sputtered. "I...I have to go."

She pushed past the crowds of people enjoying themselves, but before she disappeared, you called, "Piper, wait!"

She whirled around, her eyes equally part hopeful and sad as she asked, "Yes?"

And you stuttered, "I...I'm really sorry."

Piper scoffed, her eyes now angry and icy. She huffed, "No need. You know what, Y/N? We're good."

Then she stalked away, the click of her shoes like a final shot in a battle.

...

Over the next days, Piper never saw you again. But you followed her from the shadows, wondering if you had done the right thing. She was pretty hurt—and now she was icy and angry, full of resentment towards you.

But she didn't express it to other people. As you watched her chatting it's her customers in the bakery, smiling sweetly and dancing around like everything was normal...you realised...Piper was special to you. And what you had done had hurt her...had maybe also hurt yourself too.

As the truth and your own feelings became more and more clear, so did the worries and questions. Would she still take you, after all the ways you had hurt her? Did she still love you anymore? How would you even tell her without her stalking away angrily just like the last time, ignoring your existence completely as if you were invisible, as if you weren't existent?

Watching her entertain her customers and chattering lively, you couldn't help but crack a small smile of your own. Even at a time like this, she still managed to make you smile.

Wasn't that true love?

...

It was a day like any other. Except not for you, and not for Piper either. You waited for Piper to close up her bakery, the rain pouring down, the darkness to the night enveloping the surroundings, and you ran out in front of her, holding a small bouquet of roses.

You waited as she raised her signature pink umbrella that made her stand out from everyone else; she had told you, it was the last thing her mother gifted her before she passed on—it was her treasure.

You wished you had just been ready to accept her love then, and save the two of you so much heartbreak.

But some things happened for a reason.

It took several seconds for her to notice you standing in the dark, standing there and glancing at her, holding up the small bundle of red flowers.

And in that instant, her original smile curved down into an icy glare, as cold as the Antarctic. One that froze your heart, and seemed to make you colder in the pouring rain.

But you decided to light your own fire as you told her. "I'm really sorry, Piper. Have you been okay...since I...I broke your heart?"

Maybe she had gotten over it a little as time passed, because this time she didn't just leave you standing there. She snapped, "Yes, and why are you here?"

"I..." You lost your words at her cold stare for a while, but remembered why you were there. "I was a fool. I didn't see how special you were to me...how important you were to me. You deserve so much better than me, Piper. But...I believe...you can help me grow into the person you want me to be."

Piper was the one speechless now, but she soon muttered, "Did you break my heart? Yes, and how will I know you won't do it again?"

"You don't," I said, staring deep into her eyes. "But you know I'll try."

And then, her umbrella slipped from her hand, and the rain soaked her hair and face, barely different from the tears rolling down her cheeks slowly. Then she stepped closer to you, bit by bit, like she was trying to convince herself that she was making the right decision.

Then, she pressed her lips against yours.
