Living Room
In a posh society's big apartment, a girl was chillin' and chatting with someone on her phone, which was on speaker. She was multitasking, trimming her nails while talking. "Haan, I had lunch already. Aaj kaam karne ka man nhi kar rha tha (Didn't feel like working today), so I didn't go to the office."
The person on the other end asked, " "tumhare boss ne kuch nahin kaha? ( Your boss didn't say anything?)
The girl replied, "Arey, nobody says anything to me, or kya aap bhul gyi ki (have you forgotten that) I'm the boss?"
The other person apologized, "Oh sorry, sorry! Are mere dimag se nikal gya. Kyunki Anu humesha apne boss ko taane marti hai. (It slips my mind. 'Cause Anu always criticizes her boss.)"
The girl agreed, "Yeah, you're right. That's her and her boss."
The other person said, "Now you tell me, uska boss gussa nhi karega us ladki oar. Humesha kuch na kuch gadbad karti rehti hai vo. (will the boss not get angry with that girl? She's always causing some trouble or the other.")
The girl defended, "Aunty, how can you talk about your daughter like that? Usko bura nhi lgega ye sab sunkar. (Won't she feel bad if she hears?)"
The other person justified, " Jo sach hai vo sach hai. (What's true is true). Anyway, that toofan (storm) hai kahan. She hasn't even replied yet."
The girl updated, "Pata ni, aunty, she hasn't come yet."
Just then, the door opened, and a girl walked in, drenched in water.
The girl on the phone gasped, "Arey! Annika, Tu itni bheegi kyu hai? Kya hua?" (Hey! Why are you wet? What happened?)
Annika, panting, managed to say, "Bus ruk jao, baad mein bataungi. Mujhe thoda rest karne do pehle. (Just wait, I'll tell you later. Let me had some rest first ). She collapsed on the sofa, water dripping everywhere.
Ishana, clearly amused, said, "Tu toh bilkul bheegi billi ki tarah dikhai de rahi hai. Pehle jaa fresh ho ja, baad mein baat karenge." (You look like a wet cat. Go freshen up first, we'll talk later.)
Annika nodded weakly and disappeared into the bathroom. Ishana chuckled, " Ye ladki kab sudhrengi? Har din koi na koi dhamaka karti rehti hai." (When will this girl improve? She's always creating some drama.)
Ishana chuckled and continued her conversation with Annika's mom, "Hello, aunty! The queen has returned, Aaj toh barish hui nahi hai, phir bhi woh bilkul bhigi hui hai! Kaun si masti ki duniya mein ghum rahi thi ye ladki? ( She is drenched in water, despite no rain today. What kind of mischief has she gotten herself into this time?"). I'll tell her to call you back once she's changed. Bye Aunty, take care."
Annika's mom, Avantika, replied, "Ye ladki bhi na, Ishu beta is ladki ka dhyan rakhna . Aisa karna apne lie or uske lie haldi vala milk bnalo. Or bina nakhre kie dono use chupchap pi lena. Chalo phir mai baad mai phone karti hu.
Ishana agreed, "Ji, aunty. Namaste."
Kitchen
She ended the call and headed to the kitchen to prepare the turmeric milk for Annika and a hot coffee for herself as she doesn't like turmeric milk, eager to hear the story behind Annika's drenched state.
As she worked, Ishana wondered what kind of adventure Annika had been up to, getting soaked in water on a rainless day. She smiled, anticipating the tale that would soon unfold.
Living Room
Ishana carried the steaming cups into the living room, where Annika was now curled up on the couch, looking like a bedraggled kitten. She handed Annika the turmeric milk and settled in beside her with her coffee.
"Okay, spill the beans," Ishana said, eyes sparkling with curiosity. "What happened? You look like you've been through a swimming pool."
Annika took a sip of the warm milk, closing her eyes in appreciation. "It's a long story," she began.
Ishana leaned in, her eyes fixed intently on Annika's face. "I'm all ears," she said, her voice full of anticipation.
Annika took a deep breath and launched into her tale, "Okay, so I was coming back from stuffing my face with junk food. So maine decide kia to take the stairs instead of the lift."
Ishana's eyes widened. "You took the stairs to the 26th floor? That's crazy!"
Annika continued " Chup! ek dum chup! let me finish. I only took the stairs from the 13th floor. I used the lift till there. By the time I reached our floor, my legs were killing me. As I was about to turn the corner, I slipped and grabbed the first thing I could find to stop myself from falling. But guess what? It was a water container someone had left there. The container couldn't handle me and broke, and all the water spilled on me!"
Ishana was laughing so hard, she was practically crying. "You, my friend, are a walking disaster. A banana peel one day, a water container the next. What's next, a falling piano?"
Annika rolled her eyes playfully. "Very funny, Ishu. At least I'm not clumsy on purpose."
Ishana couldn't contain her laughter anymore. "I don't know, with you, it's hard to tell. You're like a magnet for mishaps."
Annika chuckled, shaking her head. "You're enjoying this, aren't you? Making fun of me, I mean."
Ishana wiped tears from her eyes, still grinning. "How can I not? You're a one-woman circus, Annika! Always juggling multiple mishaps at once."
Annika playfully tossed a cushion at Ishana. "Shut up, you're just jealous of my exciting life."
Ishana ducked, laughing. "Exciting? You call that exciting? I call it chaotic!"
Annika shrugged, smiling. "Hey, at least I'm never boring."
Ishana nodded, still chuckling. "That's true. You're always entertaining, Annika. Even if it's at your own expense."
Annika grinned, feeling happy to have shared her silly story with her friend. "Hey, that's what friends are for, right? To laugh at each other's misadventures?"
Ishana nodded, her laughter finally subsiding. "Seriously, we should tell your mom how you ended up soaking wet."
Annika raised an eyebrow. "Why do you want to tell her? And why would she be worried when she didn't even know I was wet?"
Ishana smirked. "Silly girl, I was already on the phone with your mom when you got back. She knows all about your swimming pool impersonation. She just told me to make you some turmeric milk."
Annika rolled her eyes. "I swear, sometimes I think she loves you more than me. She never talks to me as much as she talks to you."
Ishana teased, "Someone's jealous. I told you, I'm your long lost sister from the Kumbh Mela."
Annika replied, "Very funny."
Ishana continued, "I talk to her all the time, not just when she calls me. That's why she's closer to me. She even says she wanted a daughter like me, not you!"
Annika playfully hit her with a pillow, starting a pillow fight. After a while, they calmed down and ordered dinner. Once they finished eating, Annika called her mom to reassure her she was okay. Then, they both fell asleep, hoping for a mishap-free day ahead.
As sleep claimed them, their laughter and shared secrets echoed softly in the quiet apartment. Tomorrow was a new day, filled with endless possibilities. For now, as they drifted into slumber, they were content in each other's company, their friendship a warm, comforting blanket against the world.
