The obnoxious blare of an alarm pulled the slumbering man from his sleep, vanquishing away whatever dreams he may have been having. A small puddle of drool dampened the cream colored cotton sheets below. Stray streams of sunlight peeked shyly through the sheer curtains, dancing across the room.
With practiced routine, he rose with a yawn, rubbing the residual sleepiness from his crusted eyes. His mouth was coated in film as he smacked his lips together to regain some of the lost moisture.
It wasn't as if he had work, but he found it better to keep routine as to not let himself go. Plus, he'd already allowed himself an extra hour of sleep as per his norm, call him rebellious.
Rising to his sock covered feet, Colonel William Lennox padded his way toward the adjoining bathroom, noting the absence of his wife in her share of the disheveled bed.
Diligently he brushed his teeth, washed his face, and ran a hand through his buzzed hair. He'd need a haircut soon at any rate. Perhaps he'd ask Sarah to give him a trim later in the week. The soldier filed it away for later as he descended the stairs, following the familiar scent of breakfast with ease.
"Daddy." The babbling of his daughter greeted him excitedly from where she sat at the dining table, her short legs swung happily back and forth.
"You're up late." Sarah remarked fondly as she plated some scrambled eggs, spatula scraping against the worn pan. She threw a smile over her shoulder to her husband.
He returned the gesture as he crossed the kitchen to peck her cheek lovingly, observing the food hungrily. "How're my girls this morning? Should've woken me up."
The smile she produced reached her baby-blue eyes with ease, tucking away some blonde hair lazily. "You're not deployed right now, I think you can sleep in a bit." The woman turned to coo at their daughter. "Isn't that right?"
Annabelle squealed in joy as she smiled brightly, apples of her cheeks turning rosy. "Yeah, daddy. Mommy made pancakes."
"Pancakes?" Lennox asked in shock with a punctuated gasp. "You did save me some, right baby?" He ruffled his daughter's messy, blonde hair.
The child erupted into a fit of giggles. "No." She kicked her legs excitedly, finding the whole situation hilarious.
"No?! You little piggy! Now, what will I eat? I can't just have eggs!" He pinched at her belly playfully as she squirmed.
"I guess daddy will just have to get up earlier next time, right?" Sarah added as she switched the stove off.
"Yeah!" Annabelle exclaimed joyfully.
"God, what ever will I do?" Lennox smiled toothily as he rose back to full height, taking the generously offered plate of food from his wife. Toast, eggs, and bacon. There really was no pancakes left for him. No matter, it wasn't a big deal. If his daughter and wife were happy, then he was too.
The soldier dropped his weight into the chair beside the small child, his wife seating herself soon there after with her own serving of food. He wasted no time in indulging his appetite, salting his eggs and shoveling them into his mouth by the fork full.
Brief conversation was exchanged through the meal as the ring of a cellphone piped up in the background.
Lennox furrowed his brow, wiping some crumbs from the stubble on his upper lip.
Sarah exhaled into her cup of orange juice. "Your phone has been ringing nonstop since I got up this morning."
"Eh, it's probably just Epps wanting to have a beer or something." He supplied as the ringing ceased.
