The following week, Y/N was interviewed for three different jobs. There was a receptionist position available at a law firm.

She didn't care for the look or sound of the woman doing the hiring, so she declined that job offer. Another position available was one at the city library. She hated the quiet and rigidly ordered work. Again, she declined the position and decided on the third.

Waitressing in a restaurant five nights a week paid more than her supermarket job, which she'd worked all day. She was surprised by the amount of tips she got as well. The clientele were more upscale than she was used to. All of the men reminded her of Jungkook, only not as handsome. One week rolled into another.

She made no friends at all and kept to herself. The owner, Kim Taehyung—yes, the same restaurant where the last time Y/N and Anaya had food together—was strict and did not let any of his employees be over-friendly with each other or the clients.

There were several strict rules in play while working. None of the employees could date each other. There could be no fighting. If Taehyung saw any of them fighting inside of his business, they were instantly fired. He didn't like it, and he wouldn't care who he was hurting. The rules worked fine for her. She noticed early on that a lot of the employees stayed to themselves instead of getting to know one another.

Knowing well that she was the best friend of Anaya, and Anaya happened to be the late girlfriend of Jungkook, Taehyung must have felt a little pity for her, so that was why he took her in.Two months had passed, and Y/N was piecing her life back together.

The pain from the loss of Anaya still lingered but had grown to be bearable. She visited Anaya's grave regularly, bringing fresh flowers and sat beside her friend's resting place as she spoke to her as if she could still hear it.

That afternoon, Y/N found herself at the cemetery. The sun was already quite low in the sky, throwing very long shadows across the headstones. She then knelt beside Anaya's grave, laying a bouquet of her favorite flowers, lilies and roses, down at the base. The sight of her friend's name etched into the stone sent another fresh wave of sorrow, but she swallowed it down, knowing she needed to speak.

"Anaya," Y/N started off, her voice shaking as she repressed tears that threatened to fall. "I'm so sorry. I never meant for any of this to happen. I never wanted to have these feelings, but I couldn't stop them. Jungkook. .. he was your boyfriend, and I know that I should have kept away, but I—"

Her voice cracked, and she pressed her hands to her eyes, fighting back the sobs that wanted to break free. That was almost too much to handle, admitting her feelings aloud.

"I didn't want to betray you," she said now, her voice ringing with emotion. "You were my best friend and I loved you. I still love you. But. .. after you were gone Jungkook was there for me. He helped me when I thought I couldn't go on. I know it isn't an excuse, but I just—"

Now the tears fell, streaming down her face as she collapsed beside the grave, grasping the cold stone as if it could draw her closer to her lost companion. "I wish you were here," she whispered, her voice shuddering with each word. "I wish you could tell me what to do. But I need you to know, I am sorry. I am so, so sorry."

Y/N sat there, crying, and her cries echoed in the cemetery's silence. She cried until she had no more tears to cry, just that hollow feeling in her chest where her heart used to be.

"I miss you so much," she purred, raw from crying. "I don't know how to move on without you."

It was getting dark up in the sky by then; she knew she needed to go. She pressed a quivering kiss to her fingers, touched Anaya's headstone, and stood up, her legs all weak from the emotional toll.

"I'll come back soon," Y/N whispered, her voice barely above a murmur. "I promise."

As she walked from the cemetery, tenuous peace began to settle over her, feeling that she had finally confessed to Anaya what she wanted to say all this time, even if it was too late.

Back in the city, Y/N was busy picking up her life. Long gone were the days of working at a supermarket. Cooking, planning small outings, and even going to movies alone, just because, seemed to fill up the time. Each little step was a way of taking back her life, bit by bit.

Yet, after all this, Jungkook's absence still gnawed at her. She never stopped loving him. It hurt more than she could ever imagine. She missed the feeling of safety he made her feel, his warmth next to her, and how he would understand her when no one else did.

Sometimes, walking in city streets, she could catch a glimpse of a tall figure with dark hair or some silhouette so much like to one she had known, and that her heart would skip a beat, convinced it was he. It never was. Ghosts—memories of him haunting her, everywhere she walked across this city.

No matter how much time passed, she still felt that interior shade of incompleteness, that part of her was left back with him. She would walk into the city, and having persuaded herself of his existence in another company of women, tears welled up in her eyes, and the pain cut through her like a knife.

Confession time! I started distancing myself from my best friend of eight years because her aunt used to badmouth me. Even though I was the total opposite of what her aunt said, my friend never defended me. Now, I think I did the right thing by distancing myself.
