"Please don't fire me," Y/N said, her voice shaking but resolute. "I am good at what I do, and I like it here. This is way better than what I did before, and, boy, am I learning so much."

Jungkook held out his hand, breaking the tension. "I'm not here to discuss your job, Y/N."

Truthfully, he was. The panic in her eyes made him second-guess his intentions. He didn't really fancy her working with Taehyung. Jungkook knew the man wasn't someone to mess with; he demanded greatness from his employees, and Jungkook didn't want to risk her job.

"Then what have you come to speak about?" Y/N asked, her hands clasped behind her back as she stared at him with uncertainty in her eyes.

It took everything in Jungkook not to let his gaze wander over her curvy body. Could she even realize the effect she has on him? All he wanted was to pull her close and claim her right there. But he couldn't. Y/N wasn't his.

"I wanted to see how you were doing," Jungkook began, wrestling with every ounce of strength to keep his voice steady. "The way I left things. it wasn't right. I should have just respected that you did move on. I guess maybe I was missing you a lot—not just your cooking, but everything." He tried to put in a humorous twist, but it fell flat.

"You're dating," Y/N said softly, almost like stating a fact more than she was asking.

"No, Angela isn't really a date," Jungkook replied.

Y/N smiled though it didn't reach her eyes. "I'm happy for you. It's what Anaya would have wanted."

Why did their every conversation need to go back to Anaya? It was as if it were some ghost—refusing to let go, pulling them back to the past all the time. He didn't want her to be happy for him or to think he was moving on.

"I doubt we'll last beyond tonight," Jungkook admitted, his voice barely above a whisper.Y/N smoothed her hands down the front of her black skirt, a nervous habit that he had come to notice. He ached to feel those hands on him instead.

"Was there anything else you wanted to talk about?" she asked, her voice tinged with a subtle tremor.

"No," Jungkook shook his head, though his heart screamed otherwise.

"Can I go?" she asked, her voice so soft it was almost as if she feared his answer.

"Sure, tell Angela I'll be out in a moment," Jungkook replied to her, feeling the words like some bitter rehashment in his mouth.

She nodded and left the room. It seemed like she had left such a vast chasm when she was gone.Seconds later, Taehyung walked back in, looking serious. "If you want me to fire her, then I shall do so. But I'll be pretty pissed off about it, and you know I don't like being forced to fire my staff. I happen to like her."

"I don't want you to fire her," Jungkook said hastily. He couldn't take this job away from her; he knew how much this meant to her.

"Then why the need to speak with her? I don't understand," Taehyung questioned, his eyes furrowing a little.

"It's nothing," Jungkook mumbled, his gaze dropping down to the floor. "She's just... Anaya's best friend."

Taehyung looked at him, reading between the lines. "She means a lot to you, doesn't she? You want me to keep an eye on her, make sure no one messes with her."

Jungkook gritted his teeth, choking on the words. That was one drunken night when he confessed everything to Taehyung: his feelings for Y/N, the guilt, the torment. Ever since then, Taehyung had been compelling him to tell her the truth.

"She means everything to me, Taehyung. I need you to protect her, make sure she's safe here. There are men who come here that. they don't care about the damage they cause. I can't let her get hurt," Jungkook spoke, his voice with an edge of desperation in it.

Taehyung nodded; he, more than anybody, knew what exactly Jungkook was implying by those words. "I'll take care of her. You have my word."

Jungkook nodded curtly and then turned to leave, but Taehyung's voice stopped him in his tracks. "One question, Jungkook. If you're in love with Y/N and have been from the first moment you saw her, why are you dating the woman outside?

Jungkook locked up stiff, the truth clawing at his chest. "Y/N doesn't know how I feel. She thinks I hate her. And I. I'm not ready to change who I am just to prove something. Anaya's death. it wasn't that long ago. How do you think she'd feel if I told her what I really think should've happened that day?"

"You cannot blame yourself for what happened, Jungkook," he said softly.

"Time will pass, but these feelings won't. Y/N will find someone else eventually. When she does, can you live with the knowledge that you could have been that man?"
