"You cannot blame yourself for what happened, Jungkook," he said softly. "Time will pass, but these feelings won't. Y/N will find someone else eventually. When she does, can you live with the knowledge that you could have been that man?"

Jungkook left the room without another word, his mind in turmoil. Each time Y/N had gone on a date, he was consumed with anxiety, wondering if this one would be the one where she'd move on for good. The thought of seeing her with someone else was unbearable, yet he couldn't force her to be with him.

Returning to his seat, he saw Angela look up at him, her red lipstick standing out like a glaring sign. Everything about her, from her overly made-up face to her artificial charm, repulsed him.
"Are you okay, baby?" she asked, her voice sugary sweet but hollow.

Why was he even trying with her? She was just the daughter of a colleague, nothing more. There was no connection, no real spark.

"I'm fine. Have you decided what you're going to order?" Jungkook replied, his tone distant as he took a sip of his wine. His eyes searched the room for Y/N, finding her at the bar talking with Namjoon. Her gaze kept flicking back to their table, ready to step in when needed.

I'll always need you, baby.

"I'll just have a salad with no meat or dressing. I need to stay in shape, and piling on the calories isn't going to cut it," Angela prattled on, completely oblivious to his lack of interest.

As she continued to ramble about her figure and how important it was to fit in, Jungkook tuned her out. Her voice grated on his nerves, each word a reminder of how far he was from what he truly wanted.

Couldn't she talk about something—anything—else?

This is what you get when you try to avoid your true feelings, he thought bitterly. All he wanted was Y/N, but he was too afraid to admit it, too scared to face the consequences of what that admission might mean.

Jungkook left the room, his thoughts spiraling into a whirlwind of confusion and frustration. Every time Y/N went on a date, he was plagued by an overwhelming sense of dread, fearing that she might finally move on and find happiness with someone else. The mere thought of her with another man was unbearable, yet he felt powerless to do anything about it.
As he returned to his seat, Angela looked up at him with a bright smile, her red lipstick striking against her pale skin. But instead of finding her attractive, Jungkook felt a wave of revulsion wash over him. Her overly made-up face and forced charm only reminded him of how superficial this whole evening was.
"Are you okay, baby?" Angela's voice was sweet, but it rang hollow in his ears.
Why was he even here with her? She was nothing more than the daughter of a colleague, someone he had no real connection with.
"I'm fine. Have you decided what you're going to order?" Jungkook asked, his voice distant as he picked up his glass of wine. His eyes drifted across the room, searching for Y/N. He found her at the bar, talking with Namjoon, her attention subtly flickering back to his table as if she were waiting for his signal.
I'll always need you, baby, he thought, his heart aching with longing.
"I'll just have a salad with no meat or dressing. I need to stay in shape, and piling on the calories isn't going to cut it," Angela continued, oblivious to his lack of interest. Her voice droned on, each word grating on his nerves, pulling him further away from the moment.
As she rambled about her figure and the importance of staying slim, Jungkook's mind wandered back to Y/N. Her warmth, her smile, the way she made him feel alive—everything about her was the opposite of the hollow interaction he was enduring now.
This is what you get when you try to avoid your true feelings, he chastised himself. He knew what he wanted, and it wasn't sitting across from him right now. It was at the bar, waiting, watching, just out of reach. But fear and uncertainty held him back, preventing him from seizing what he truly desired.

Serving Jungkook wasn't all that bad. Their orders were a little boring and predictable for her taste. What's the point of ordering something if you're going to remove half of the good stuff? Meat and dressing made the salad.

She took the order through to Taehyung, who scorned it.

"What's the fucking point of me even having a menu?" he said.

"I don't know. The girl doesn't know what she's missing, that's for sure." He stared at her, and she placed a hand to her mouth. "Sorry, sir. I tried the salad when you were asking for tasters. It was so delicious." The salad had been amazing, and she'd been trying to recreate it at home.
"You've got good taste. I can appreciate a woman with good taste." He tapped her shoulder. "Go and do your work. I will cook up this poor excuse for a meal."

The meal went by smoothly, with only Jungkook ordering dessert.

Namjoon showed them out once they were finished. She went to get their plates when Jungkook returned.

"If you ever need me for anything, please don't hesitate to call." He placed a card in her hand. She looked down as he left the room to see his business card with all of his numbers.
In all the time they'd known each other, she'd never once asked for his number or his card.
Placing the card in her pocket, she went about her work for the remainder of the night. The card held all of her focus, even though she couldn't see it.

When she got back to her apartment later that night, she took the card out and stared at his name. Jeon Jungkook's name was scrawled over the rectangle in fancy writing.

Get over yourself, Y/N. This means nothing.

She couldn't bring herself to throw it away and left it on the fridge under a magnet.

The days and weeks passed with her work at the restaurant. Her life slowly rebuilt as she began to decorate her apartment. Every now and then, Jungkook would frequent the restaurant with a business partner or date. She never gave him much thought, and as time passed, she started to feel less trapped by her feelings.Y/N took the time to visit Anaya's grave, replacing the dying flowers with fresh ones.
