I turn to leave, my hand hovering over the silver doorknob when I suddenly feel the need to say one last thing, something that's been nagging at me since our conversation began.
"Garrick, I know you don't want to get involved, but... I'm glad you did tonight. I'm glad you were there to save me." I softly spoke as I glance over my shoulder to gauge his reaction from where he sat at his desk.
His enthralling hazel eyes meet mine and for a split second, I see something flicker in them. Something raw and unguarded, a glint of emotion that he quickly buries beneath his usual stoicism.
He opens his mouth as if to say something, but then he closes it, opting on simply nodding once more.
I take that as my cue to leave, pushing open the door and stepping out into the hallway. The cool air of the corridor greets me, a stark contrast to the warmth of Garrick's room.
As I sluggishly make my way back to my dorm, I can't help but replay the night's events over and over in my mind, the weight of everything settling over me like a heavy cloak.
I wonder if there's even a slight chance that Garrick could be romantically interested in me.
The thought lingers as I reach my room, the door creaking as I carefully push it open. The room is dark and quiet, my fellow first-years already fast asleep in peaceful slumber unaware of the turmoil that's kept me out so late.
I silently slip into bed, pulling the covers over me as I close my eyes, trying to banish the thoughts that still swirl in my mind preventing me from achieving sleep.
"Where have you been?" The hushed question comes from the head of my bed, my eyelids fly open, completely startled so much so that I spring up to a sit only to spot Violet.
Despite the dimly lit room, the gentle glow of the moon allows me to just make out the evident frown adorning her soft features.
"You scared me." I breathe out as relief floods me that it isn't Terra the terror.
I came up with that little nickname all by myself, not that I'd ever dare verbalise it in fear that Terra would overhear, go ballistic and bite my head off.
"Sorry." Vi sheepishly apologises before getting back on topic, not allowing me to evade her question.
"So... Where were you? Rhiannon was worried sick and went looking for you but came back when a Professor got upset for being out so late." Guilt consumes my insides like a wildfire at the information, the mental image of Rhi scurrying through the halls in search for me.
