THE DUELING CLUB
The next few weeks were normal, but today, everyone eagerly hurried over to Defense Against the Dark Arts Class where we took a little trip to the Great Hall. Instead of four long wooden tables with plates, silverware, and goblets. There was one long platform with phases of the moon on it for decoration. Professor Lockhart walked across the platform and shouted, "Gather 'Round! Gather 'round! Can everybody see me? Can you all hear me?"
I stood next to Draco on one side of the platform, peeking over it to get a good view of everything. Lockhart continued, "In light of the dark events of recent weeks, Professor Dumbledore has permitted me to start this little Dueling Club to train you all up in case you ever need to defend yourselves, as I myself have done on countless occasions. For full details, see my published works."
I rolled my eyes at that statement. "Let me introduce my assistant, Professor Snape." Lockhart held his hand to the other side of the platform where I was. Professor Snape cautiously walked up the steps and onto the platform with his arms crossed and an unpleasant expression on his face. "He has sportingly agreed to help with a short demonstration. I don't want any of you youngsters to worry. You'll still have your Potions Master when I'm through with him. Never fear."
I wasn't scared for my Head of House. Snape was known to annually apply for the Defense Against the Dark Arts position. He fancied it, so I had no worries that Snape would absolutely destroy him. In fact, I was practically counting on it. I shot a look at Draco holding two galleons, I bet him Snape would win. Draco whispered, "You're on."
Professor Snape and Professor Lockhart walked up to each other and started the duel. They greeted one another in classic fashion, drawing their wands in front of their faces, and brought them to their sides. They gave each other a little bow and turned around, they walked backwards ten paces, I counted. The teachers pointed their wands at each other. "One, Two, Three," Lockhart slowly counted.
Snape shot first as soon as he said three, "Expelliarmus!"
A white blast of light shot from Snape's wand and shot Lockhart straight into his chest, knocking him back five feet and making him lose his wand as part of the disarming charm. Lockhart stood back up as though nothing had happened, laughing it off. "An excellent idea to show them that, Professor Snape, but if you don't mind me saying, it was pretty obvious what you were about to do. If I had wanted to stop you, it would have been too easy."
Snape didn't seemed persuaded by Lockhart's words. I held out my hand not even looking at Draco but at Lockhart, I heard him scoff and put two galleons in my hands. As for the duel, it was most certainly not obvious as our Defense Professor didn't even move or open his mouth to deflect the spell. He didn't even try to shoot a spell first. Professor Snape suggested, "Perhaps, it would be prudent to first teach the students how to block unfriendly spells, Professor."
Professor Lockhart smiled in embarrassment, "An excellent suggestion, Professor Snape. Let's have a volunteer pair. Mm, Potter? Weasley? How 'bout you?"
"No, Weasley's wand caused devastation even with the simplest spells, we'll be sending Potter to the Hospital wing in a matchbox," Snape informed. "Might I suggest someone from my own house? Malfoy, perhaps?"
He turned around and pointed at Draco, he immediately got up and onto the platform. They both drew their wands and walked up to each other. They put it in front of their face for a few moments, starting the duel, and back down to their sides. They were supposed to bow to each other, but they hated each other so they didn't. They walked backwards and turned around into dueling positions with their hands up and wands ready. Professor Lockhart exclaimed, "On the count of three, cast your charms to disarm your opponent! Only to disarm. We don't want any accidents here. One! Two!—"
