On a lazy afternoon, the rustling of leaves whispered secrets to the quiet streets. The air had the sweet scent of freshly cut grass, and the occasional buzz of a distant lawnmower filled the spaces between the whispers. Two figures sat on the edge of a wooden porch, their laughter echoing down the block, bouncing off the neatly trimmed hedges and bicycles parked haphazardly in driveways. "For real that girl did not eat ugly ass" says Brooklynn through her laugher "True dat" says Michael his cheeks turning red from laughing so much
Brooklynn wiped a tear from her eye, her mascara smudging slightly. She looked over at Michael, her best friend since kindergarten, and felt a warmth spread through her chest. His black eyes sparkled with mischief as he recounted the latest drama from school. Michael was the heart of their friendship, the one who could always make her laugh, even when she felt like she was drowning in the shallow waters of Depression. He had a way of cutting through the BS and pointing out the absurdity of life.
But even the brightest days had shadows, and for Brooklynn, that shadow was her ever-present crushes. She had a knack for falling hard and fast, her heart fluttering like a bird trapped in a cage every time a new boy caught her eye. "Omg your totally checking him out not this again.," Michael said, nudging her with his elbow. He had noticed the way she had been mooning over the latest object of her affection, a tall, lanky guy with messy brown hair who played drums in the school band.
"What? No!" she protested, her cheeks flushing a shade darker than the setting sun. But Michael knew her too well. He raised an eyebrow and smirked, the corners of his mouth curling up. "Of Course, just ask him out "
Brooklynn's eyes widened in horror at the suggestion. "No way, Michael. What if he says no then im cooked for sure. " Michael chuckled, nudging her again. "What's" the worst that can happen? I mean of course he's going to say no but, At least try you got this? if he says no ill be here trust."
Brooklynn sighed, her heart racing at the thought. "Okay, okay. I'll talk to him tomorrow." She took a deep breath, trying to calm her nerves. Michael had always been the one to push her out of her comfort zone, and she knew he was right. If she didn't take the chance, she'd always wonder.
