The next day, the school hallways buzzed with the usual mix of excitement and dread that accompanied the start of a new week. The cafeteria was a cacophony of clattering trays and the smell of overcooked meatloaf. Michael spotted the drummer boy, leaning against a locker, surrounded by a group of equally unenthusiastic bandmates. He gave Brooklynn a nod, and she took it as her cue to ask him.
Her legs felt like jelly as she approached, her heart pounding in her chest. The drummer looked up, his eyes meeting hers briefly before he glanced away, shuffling his feet. "Hey," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. He looked back up, a puzzled expression on his face. " do i know you" he responded, his voice deeper than she had expected.
"I'm, I'm Brooklynn," she stuttered, trying to sound casual. "We have math together?" The drummer's eyes lit up with recognition. "Oh, right. What's up Brook?" His name tag read 'Percy'.
"Well, I was wondering if maybe you'd like to hang out after school tomorrow? Just us, you know, to get to know each other better," she said, trying to sound nonchalant while her insides were doing somersaults.
Percy surprised but then a plank expression grew on his face "I don't know you that well" He paused, looking around the hallway as if checking for his friends needing to get out of this situation.
Percy looked at the phone and then back at her, his expression unchanged. "oh, shit we do like the same music," he said, his voice trailing off as he glanced back at her. "But maybe another time I have band in a couple of minutes"
Brooklynn felt a rush of relief. It wasn't a no, but it wasn't a yes either. "Okay, sure," she said, trying not to sound too disappointed. "Just let me know."
