Michael catches up to her, his eyes dancing with amusement. "So, watcha got planed?" he asks, leaning against the locker next to hers.
Brooklynn's cheeks are flushed, and she can't help but grin. "Movies, no maybe coffee? no for sure movies, right?" she says, not knowing what to pick scared Percy might not like the place she chooses.
"Chill out, BK. It's just a hangout. You're overthinking it," Michael says, shutting his locker with a bang.
Brooklynn nods, trying to shake off her nerves. "Yeah, you're right. It's just... I really like him don't wanna fuck it up you know."
Michael laughs, "You're gonna be fine. Just be yourself, and if he doesn't like that, then he's not worth it."
Brooklynn nods, trying to soak in Michael's confidence like it's a warm bath. They walk out of the school, the cool fall air a stark contrast to the stale classroom air. As they part ways, Michael says, "Call me after, okay?"
"I will," she yells, feeling the weight of his concern. She makes her way home, her thoughts bouncing between the excitement of the upcoming date and the fear of rejection.
Meanwhile, Michael walks down the familiar path to his house, his thoughts wandering to his own life. His home, a typical suburban two-story, had seen better days. The paint was chipping, and the lawn looked like it hadn't been mowed in years. Inside, the air was thick with the smell of burnt food and tension. His mother, a single parent, had been working double shifts at the hospital, leaving him to fend for himself most nights.
