"STOP!" Carmen called out, reaching her hand out towards the dog, at that moment the dog flew out of the way. Glowing a light purple. She quickly set the dog down on the sidewalk next to her.

The sounds of whispering filled Carmen's ears as she instinctively threw up her hood and shielded her face.

She felt a small tap on her shoulder and quickly turned around, keeping her head down.

A small boy. He was very thin, and soaking wet. His clothes looked worn and he was walking barefoot.

"Excuse me..." His voice was so quiet, so hesitant...

"Yes?" Carmen replied with a comforting smile, crouching down to his level. "Is this your dog?"

The boy nodded, his gaze locked on the floor. The golden retriever trotted towards the boy and sat down beside him.

"What's his name?" She asked as the boy pet his dog.

"Rory..." He mumbled, clinging to the oblivious dog next to him.

"That's a cute name. And if you don't mind me asking... What's your name?" She politely questioned,

He seemed hesitant, looking around as if he were thinking about it.

"Chayanne.." He quietly answered, sticking close to his pet.
"That's a lovely name Chayanne."Carmen hummed, "My name is Carmen." She smiled reassuringly, momentarily glancing around at the civilians recording. "Do you want to come to work with me? So we can get out of this rain? Or do you have a safe place to be?"

He thought again, then nodded. "Ok.. Can Rory come with..?"

"Of course he can hun." She nodded, offering her hand to him. He slowly took it, walking to the coffee shop.

"Here- you can go sit over there ok?" She pointed to a small booth in the corner. He locked eyes with her.

"Miss?"

"Yes?"

"Thank you for saving Rory." He stated before shuffling over to the booth.

Meanwhile Effie sat there on the verge of tears, when her boss, Chris, walked up to her.

"Morning Cook. who- are you crying...?" He folded his arms, looking down at her.

She quickly wiped her watering eyes and faced him. "What- who? Me? Crying? NO. Haha..."

"Ok... Well who's the kid?" HE raised a brow, gesturing to Chayanne.

"Oh- uh yea, he needed shelter from the rain... So I just let him stay here."

Chris sighed, "Cook, you know this is a health issue. You can't just invite homeless kids and their dogs in here..."

"Why- why would this be a health issue?"

He raised a brow at her then looked at the dog aggressively itching itself.

"Come on. The thing has fleas. I want them both out." He pinched the bridge of his nose.

Carmen scoffed, visibly pissed off. "That thing's name is Rory, and that kid-" She started, but was cut off by Luke stepping in front of her.

"Hey guys, what's the issue here?"

"He won't let that poor boy and his dog take some shelter here." Carmen glared.

"They probably both have fleas-"

"HEY." A female voice called from Chris's office, causing him to flinch. "You're gonna let this sweet boy stay here won't you chris!" A southern woman glared at him.

Chris visibly slouched, sighing. "Yes hunny..." He mumbled before looking back at them. "Only for today." He whispered.

Carmen stuck out her tongue as soon as he closed his office door shut.

"God you are such a child..." Luke groaned, heading back behind the counter.

"What did I do-"

"I didn't know Mrs. Bennett was gonna be here today" Effie smiled, handing Carmen a coffee.

"Thank god she did..." She sighed, following Luke towards the counter.

"Yeah, what was that all about?" Effie questioned, looking at her.

Luke motioned towards the soaking wet kid and dog. Causing Effie to loudly gasp.

"IT WAS YOU WHO SAVED THE-"
