As soon as I got to school I saw Dean waiting for me at our usual spot in the gym. "Good morning, Dean. How you doing buddy?
"Morning, Elijah. I'm fine." He pauses for a second. "Can I ask you something?"
"You just did." I say at a lame attempts to make a joke. It didn't work. "Okay, what is it?"
"Canyoujoinbookclubwithme? PLLEEEAAASSSEEE!!!!!" Surprisingly in know what he said.
"Book club? Why?"
"My parents are making me join a club and this is the easiest one to join. Please say you'll join. I don't want to do it alone."
I sighed. "I'll ask my parents. Is there a paper or something we have to sign?"
"Yeah, it's in the library." Dean said with excitement in his voice. "We can go before class."
"Okay."
"Thank you so much, Elijah. I knew I could count on you."
"You better be lucky that I read to live. Seriously, if I stop reading I'll stop breathing."
"Whatever." He punched me lightly on the arm.
After we left the gym we went to the library. "Make sure you get this signed by your guardian and bring the five dollars in on the date listed below." The librarian said. "Any questions?"
"No ma'am." I say and the librarian looks a little stunned.
What, I want to say. You never seen a young man in the library, signing up for book club, and using the proper names he's been taught his entire life to say.
I didn't say that though. I simply told her to have a nice day, she wished me the same and I went to class.
Let's just say, book club is the bomb if you want free books.
Thanks Dean.
