The fresh, citrusy aroma of roasted coffee beans combined with several sweet pastries invaded my nostrils.

My fingertips drummed against the cold table. My fist rested comfortably underneath my chin.

I stared out the large window at the dazzling garden outside, blocking out the hustling and bustling taking place inside the charming Café.

I wondered if it was a mistake coming here or if I should have stayed home where I was safer and more content.

No. I have to do this. After all it's the right thing to do after everything that's happened.

I inhaled deeply.

Relax Vannessa.

If everything goes south at least you tried to make things right. Everything else will fall into place how they should and if it's meant to be then it will be.

I checked the time on my phone again.

4:15 pm.

I adjusted the red halterneck blouse and folded my jeans clad legs under the table. My white sneakers squeaked a little.

She should've been here fifteen minutes ago.

I sighed once more, suddenly feeling drained.

The hope in my heart dwindled and I cursed myself again.

Maybe I shouldn't have come.

I grabbed my bag and phone, sliding out of the seat, the leather protesting under my legs.

My eyes widened. The slow beats of my heart changed to sharp beats and my breath quickened.

I couldn't believe it.

"Allison," I breathed.

She had her lips in a thin line. Her red hair tumbled over her shoulders gracefully, matching the flowy floral dress that ended a few inches above her knees. Her demeanor wasn't welcoming and suddenly I felt anxious.

What did I expect? Bright smiles, a bouquet of flowers and hearty sentiments?

"Vannessa," she greeted with a brief nod.

"I didn't think you were gonna show up?" I put my phone and bag back on the table.

"I wasn't."

I bit my lip at her simple answer.
