"I'm getting tired even for a phoenix always rising from the ashes,"
-Taylor Swift
I ran and ran, as fast as my legs would carry me. I could hear my feet pounding against the damp pavement at a steady pace, which pushed me to go faster. I saw the houses blurring into one as I sprinted past, hoping to leave all my thoughts and the pain of the past few days behind me.
It was around quarter to six in the morning and I was on a run before school. I didn't usually run at this time but since my step brothers had been on my ass about injuring myself again and how my ankle was still too weak, I had been sneaking out because the one day a week they suggested that I ran just wasn't enough.
They didn't understand how much I needed this. I needed to run.
Besides, I hadn't realized how nice it was to run in the morning either. It was so peaceful and there was hardly a person in sight, there weren't any cars around either, except for the odd few that had to work early but most people were still asleep. Instead of cars the sound of the birds chirping filled my ears. And that was the only music I needed and it made me feel at ease, like everything was magically better.
I entered the driveway at full speed and then came to a stop, panting and trying to catch my breath again. Today, after school was the first cross country practice and thankfully I was allowed to join the team.
Well it wasn't exactly hard to get Mum to sign the form and hand over the money for the meets, since she was drunk in the bar on the 3rd floor most of the time.
Ever since our argument we had hardly spoken. I couldn't tell who was doing most of the avoiding but it was easy in a really big house. I hated to see her like that, slowly wasting away and turning to alcohol to solve her problems, but I knew I couldn't help her without breaking myself.
I'd already tried.
Once I caught my breath I tiptoed up the stairs to my floor and hopped in the shower. It was now six, so I had a bit to relax before I had to leave for school.
It had been a few days but I was still a bit hesitant to get in a car. I honestly would've preferred walking to school but it was too far, therefore I didn't have a choice.
All my Step - brothers now seemed to know about the near accident and the argument I had with Mum. I guess the word gets around in this house, but I was honestly grateful that they are so close and found out from one another because I don't know if I could tell that story again without that sickening pit appearing in my stomach.
I got dressed fast into my uniform - since I now had both legs and it didn't take me 10 minutes to put a skirt on. I then slicked my hair back into a braid and put on some light makeup.
I flopped back onto my bed and just stared at the sealing, I did that a lot lately. Time flew by fast usually and I would spend a while just stuck in my own thoughts. Everytime I'd try to claw myself out another negative thought would smash me back down.
