Coraline and Wybie started by searching around the other pink palace. The wood that doesn't belong sounded like it would be something out of the ordinary. While Coraline searched outside, Wybie searched inside. So far, nothing really seemed out of the ordinary. They both decided to meet outside after having little luck. "Are we not searching hard enough?" Wybie asked. Coraline thought for a moment. "Well, what if we need to expand? There's the forest, and I haven't made it to the attic yet." Wybie agreed to start looking in the forest as Coraline started making her way to the attic.

Just as Coraline made it into the attic, she immediately saw the wood that didn't belong. Among the ceiling beams was an oddly colored beam, which was closer to black whereas the other beams were brown. This oddly colored beam was also shaped more like a cylinder. "That must be it." Coraline says, reaching up to grab it. Suddenly, several huge spiders made of sewing needles scattered all over the wand piece, knocking Coraline down as she screamed. These spiders were the size of dinner plates, and gave Coraline flashbacks of the night she and Wybie defeated the other mother's hand and got rid of the key.

Wybie heard her, and ran up to the attic. One of the needle spiders was crawling on Coraline, scratching her face. Wybie picked it up and flung it across the attic, smashing it into pieces. Coraline got up, and started smashing them with random objects just laying around in the room. The last one was ripping out the wand piece. Before Coraline or Wybie could stop it, the metal spider got away. Both Wybie and Coraline ran outside to see if they could chase it, but they couldn't find it. Coraline ran off into the woods behind the house while Wybie ran to the other side of the house to search the garden.

So far, Coraline and Wybie didn't have any luck finding the metal spider or the first piece of the wand. Coraline and Wybie looked up at the sky. A huge alarm clock-like looking sign was visible, saying that it was already 1:00 in the afternoon, implying that it had been a few hours. "It's speeding up time!" Coraline says. "What? That's not fair!" "Oh believe me, it won't play on our terms. Once we find the wand, we're going to have to find a way to be sure the spell we get is the right one. It almost seems too easy to find the wand and the fairy will just hand over the spell that will lead to its demise." Wybie knew Coraline was right.

"Now we know what to look for. If the wand is black and round, we just have to keep an eye out for other round black pieces of wood." Coraline nodded, knowing that Wybie was right. "Then let's keep going. As soon as we find that metal spider, we sneak up on it, smash it and grab the wand." The couple nodded to each other, then split up again. Wybie headed back into the forest, while Coraline went downstairs to the basement.

While Wybie was in the woods, he searched closely to every tree he came across. The forest was dark, and he really wished he had a flashlight. As if the other world was on his side, a flashlight fell from one of the trees. Wybie picked it up, and used it to search the branches above him. He was relieved to see the metal spider climbing, but it was too high. Wybie started climbing anyway, knowing that his kids' souls are at stake. When he could see the pink palace, he shined the flashlight towards the other pink palace, trying to signal Coraline. He wasn't sure if it was working. Suddenly, the metal spider started crawling towards him at a fast pace, still carrying the wand in its fangs like some kind of worm.

Wybie quickly swung onto a branch, kicking at the spider. The metal spider clawed at him, scratching his leg. That scratch was almost like a knife slicing him rather than a simple sewing needle, and it hurt. Wybie screamed in pain as the spider advanced on him. He backed up on the tree branch, but the branch couldn't support his weight much longer. The branch started to droop as the spider got closer. Wybie looked down, noticing the long fall. Coraline came running up, having noticed his flashlight signal.

Panicking, Coraline noticed a branch that Wybie could jump to and climb his way back down. "Wybie! Jump to the branch behind you! It'll be okay!" Wybie reached for the branch and grabbed it, just as Coraline picked up a rock and threw it at the metal spider, knocking it off the tree, causing it to fall to the ground and shatter. Wybie successfully got to the other tree and climbed down. Coraline picked up the wand piece and put it in her bag. "One down, four to go." Coraline says, proudly to Wybie. Just then, thunder was heard in the distance. Not a storm kind of thunder, but rather, as if the spirit was getting angry. "We're in for a rough game."

Coraline and Wybie looked back up at the sky. It was now 10:00 P.M. "Can it do that?" Wybie asked. "Don't worry, we're getting the hang of it." Coraline assures him, remembering the game she played with the beldam. "We'll find the pieces, get the right spell and save our children. We just gotta stick together." Wybie found comfort in Coraline's words, and experience. Knowing that she had been here before and is aware that anything can happen here, he's just glad that Coraline is here. As the continued to search in the forest, the thunder got louder. The fairy is watching.
