It was a rare moment of downtime during a race weekend, and a group of drivers had gathered for a bit of banter. The atmosphere was lighthearted, filled with laughter and jokes as they relaxed before the next round of media duties or practice sessions.
Lia had stepped out for a moment wanting to attend a meeting with some team principals talking about routines and safety for the drivers while they were travelling as a group.
George, Alex, Lando, and a few others were seated around a table, engaged in a conversation that had veered into a discussion about fears and phobias. It had started innocently enough, with Pierre admitting he hated spiders, after a big one appeared on the wall right across him.
The French had gasped and grabbed onto Estebans arm. The second French driver immediately immediately turned his attention to his friend. "What is it? What's happening?" he asked, concern lacing his voice.
Pierre, still clutching Esteban's arm, pointed shakily to the corner of the room. "There is a fucking spider in here. Why is there a spider in here?" His voice was a mix of fear and disbelief, as if the very presence of the arachnid was a personal affront.
All eyes turned to Pierre, who had now gone pale, his eyes wide with terror. The French driver still instinctively holding onto Esteban's arm, his fingers digging in as if holding on for dear life.
Zhou, noticing Pierre's distress, stopped mid-sentence and followed his gaze. "Where?" he asked, scanning the room.
Pierre, eyes now squeezed shut as if hoping the spider might disappear on its own, slightly hid behind the tall figure of Esteban, using him as a human shield. The sight of the usually confident Pierre cowering behind Esteban was almost comical, but the genuine fear in his voice kept anyone from laughing.
Lando, trying to ease the tension, stood up and headed towards the corner where Pierre had pointed, ready to play the hero. "Don't worry, Pierre," he said with a grin. "I'll save you."
But before Lando could reach the corner, Alex, who had been watching the whole scene unfold with a bemused expression, decided to help his British friend. They eventually located it and shooing it out the window. Pierre let out a breath of relief, finally releasing his grip on Esteban's arm. Esteban gave him a reassuring pat on the back, and Pierre muttered a quick thanks, still a bit shaken but grateful.
The conversation stayed around their fears and dislikes, Geroge huffed out "I have no fears." He sat back in his chair, arms crossed, with a smirk that suggested he was quite pleased with himself.
Alex rolled his eyes "Okay so what if woke up one day and Lando was taller than you?"
The question hung in the air for a moment, a perfectly timed distraction from the spider situation. George froze. His confident smirk faltered, his gaze shifting from Lando to Alex and back again.
Lando, sensing an opportunity for mischief, straightened up, trying to appear as tall as possible. He shot George a cheeky grin, clearly enjoying the idea.
George, after a moment of consideration, sighed dramatically, his shoulders slumping in mock defeat. "I have one fear."
The entire group burst into laughter, the tension from the spider incident easing as everyone got caught up in the humor of the situation. Even Pierre, still half-hiding behind Esteban, managed a weak smile, though he kept a wary eye on the corner where the spider was last seen.
The group settled back into their seats, the earlier fear and tension replaced by the easy camaraderie that came with shared jokes and experiences. George, still laughing at Alex's quip, glanced over at Lando and grinned. "You'll never be taller than me," he teased, regaining some of his earlier confidence.
Lando just shrugged, still smiling. "We'll see about that," he said, though there was no real challenge in his voice, just the friendly rivalry that had always existed between them.
