August’s hands shook as she held the phone to her ear, listening to the endless ringing on the other end. When River finally answered, her voice was tinged with an edge that made August’s heart sink even further.
“August,” River said, her tone clipped, “we need to talk.”
August’s throat tightened. She hadn’t even had the chance to explain yet, and already something was wrong. “River, I—”
“No, listen to me,” River cut her off, her voice firm but strained, like she was holding back a tide of emotion. “I just got off the phone with Luca.”
The world seemed to tilt for August, a cold dread creeping into her chest. Luca had already spoken to River, and the way River’s voice trembled with barely concealed hurt and anger made it clear that whatever he’d said had done its damage.
“River, please, you have to listen to me,” August pleaded, desperate to be heard before it was too late. “Luca—he kissed me, but I didn’t want it. I pushed him away. I swear, I didn’t—”
“Is that really what happened, August?” River’s voice was cold now, a bitter edge that cut through August’s heart. “Because Luca told me a very different story. He said you kissed him first. That you’ve been leading him on for weeks, pretending to be confused but really just playing games with both of us.”
“That’s a lie!” August’s voice broke, panic seeping into every word. “River, I would never do that to you! He’s lying to you because he knows—he knows how much you mean to me, and he wants to ruin that!”
But River’s silence on the other end of the line was devastating. August could almost see her, standing there with the phone in her hand, torn between believing the person she loved and the fear that maybe, just maybe, she had been betrayed in the worst possible way.
“Why would he lie about this, August?” River finally asked, her voice hollow, like she was afraid of the answer.
“Because he’s been trying to get between us for weeks!” August cried, her emotions spiraling out of control. “He’s been trying to make me doubt everything, to pull me away from you. And when that didn’t work, he… he did this.”
River was quiet for a long moment, the silence heavy with unspoken thoughts. When she finally spoke again, her voice was softer, but still laced with hurt. “I don’t know what to believe right now. I don’t know what to think.”
“Believe me,” August whispered, her voice trembling. “Please, River, you have to believe me.”
“I want to,” River said, her voice thick with emotion. “But Luca sounded so sure. He said you told him you were confused and that you didn’t know how to handle your feelings for both of us.”
August felt like the ground was crumbling beneath her feet. “That’s not true. I’ve never said that to him. I’ve never felt that way, River. I love you, only you.”
The weight of the words hung between them, and August waited, holding her breath, praying that River would see through Luca’s lies. But when River finally responded, it was clear that the seed of doubt had already been planted.
“I need time, August,” River said quietly. “I need to figure out what’s really going on here. I can’t… I can’t just ignore what Luca told me, even if I want to believe you. This is… too much.”
“River, please,” August begged, tears slipping down her cheeks. “Don’t shut me out. We can talk about this and work through it together. Just don’t push me away.”
“I’m not pushing you away,” River replied, though her voice was strained. “I’m just… I need space to think. To process everything.”
The line went quiet for a moment, and then River’s voice came back, softer, almost defeated. “I’m going to hang up now. I’ll… I’ll talk to you later.”
“River, wait—” August’s voice cracked with desperation, but the line went dead before she could say anything else.
She stood there, staring at her phone, disbelief and despair crashing over her in waves. Luca had twisted everything, turning her world upside down with his lies. And now, River—the person she cared about most—was caught in the middle, torn between love and the fear of betrayal.
August sank to the floor, her body shaking with sobs. She had never felt so helpless, so utterly alone. The walls of the studio seemed to close in around her, the familiar space now a prison of doubt and regret.
Hours passed, though August was barely aware of the time. Her mind kept replaying the conversation with River, over and over, until every word was etched into her memory. She tried to imagine what Luca had said, the lies he had spun, and how he had made them sound so believable. The thought of it made her sick.
She knew she couldn’t just leave things like this. She had to find a way to prove the truth to River, to make her see that Luca was the one lying, not her. But the question was how. How could she undo the damage that had already been done?
As the evening wore on, August forced herself to stand, wiping the tears from her face. She couldn’t give up. She wouldn’t let Luca win. Somehow, she had to find a way to expose him for what he really was—a manipulator, a liar—and reclaim what was slipping through her fingers.
Her thoughts were a tangled mess of fear and determination as she left the studio, her mind racing with plans and possibilities. She would talk to Olivia and find out if she had noticed anything suspicious about Luca. She would confront Luca directly if she had to, and she would make him admit the truth. Whatever it took, she wouldn’t let River be lost to her because of a web of lies.
But deep down, August knew that even if she could prove her innocence, the trust between her and River had been shaken, perhaps irreparably. And that was a wound that would take time—and a lot of love—to heal.
For now, though, all she could do was fight. Fight for the truth, fight for her love, and hope that, in the end, it would be enough.
