CHAPTER THIRTY FIVE
✩ ✩ ✩
Hours blended together in an effortless blur as industrial lands and countrysides whisked past the windows of the home bound train. Tears streamed down her face silently, as though now forever imprinted on her cheeks. Odelya figured she would never cease to cry from this point forward, as her heart was broken by dead children and a once indispensable whore.
Despite his various excuses, Finnick's final rendezvous with one of his many mistresses was blatantly obvious due to the bruises which stained his neck and him having almost missed the train. His apologies were the only thing which filled the air despite the awkward tension that now would seemingly never dissipate.
Such an emotionally scarring concept were relationships, whether platonic or romantic and the one between Odelya and Finnick had always existed someplace between the two. However, how terrible was the need for her to accept that their friendship would truly never be the same as it had been before the reaping.
For now the language of friendship was perhaps too strongly complex to describe the relationship between the two victors. Once imagined that their love for each other could overcame any tribulations, Odelya now found that any woman willing to engage in sexual relations with Finnick would always be more important than she.
Odelya had figured recently that life was far too short and complicated to not be your favourite persons, favourite person. Few people valued her as she deserved, yet those who did were far more important to concern herself with that some common whore.
Never before wishing to cease contact with her sunshine, Odelya had finally accepted the presence of the moon and would find ways to cope without the light which once illuminated her soul. Visible upon her heart were an abundance of scars, but perhaps the least discernible was of the most pain to her. For it was that of a sea eyed sailor who would spend his days of absence in her life in regretful solitude, reminiscing memories with his beloved mermaid.
As though he would never truly be happy again due to the distance between their hearts, Finnick figured he would forever spend his nights awake in a living nightmare. For the space in his heart once filled by a mermaid was now but an empty void full of screaming Siren's willing his ship to sink.
Finally as Odelya was beginning to imagine that the train ride to never end and her reunion with Reign was merely another form of cruel trickery derived from the mansion of President Snow. However, as the train slowed to a halt and Odelya could finally see the ocean filled horizon, her heart thawed ever so slightly.
Heads obscured her visibility of the horizon as her District awaited the homecoming of the newest Victor. Odelya would never understand their excitement, the only person she wanted to see would be stuck at the back of the crowd, unable to even see his beloved sister as she disembarked the train.
A terrible chapter in her life was closed when Odelya finally spotted Reign's head in the crowd. He looked as though he had aged years, despite the last time them locking eyes had been a few weeks ago. His under eyes were covered with dark circles as though he hadn't slept since her departure, which when Odelya thought about it he probably hadn't.
Blotchy patches were forever imprinted on his face for he had always tried to be similar to Odelya in character, so as she was now cursed to an eternity of depression, so was he.
Odelya began to force her way through the adoring crowd, just waiting for her to embrace her District home. Only one thought was in her mind and it overcame her being, her little brother was just a few steps away and the only thing distancing her to him was her people, of whom she had no interest in communicating with.
Realising who she was heading towards, the crowd parted as though it were controlled by a divine being, which would be perhaps the only time in her life she had received such help. Finally being able to see his sister, the only family he had remaining, Reign broke down, clutching his chest and sobbing his heart through his eyes.
"My boy," Odelya mumbled as she reached him, leaning down slightly for he still for a small time remaining was shorter than her. Wrapping her arms around his shaking body, Reign buried his head in her shoulder and sobbed.
"Oh, my darling Reign," Odelya whispered, tightening her hug as though he would disappear if she would be taken away from him again.
"Please don't leave me again," Reign cried into her shoulder, "I love you, Odelya."
Reign had been but a little boy when Melody and Orion had passed and even young when Mama and Papa had been stolen in the nighttime. All he could remember for stability in his lifetime was Odelya and when she had been taken from him also his world crumbled, but surely nothing in the world could be so cruel as to steal a sister from her brother again, for it would be Reign's final straw to plunge to the oceans floor.
Reign felt for Odelya the same way of which Florence did and he in difference to her would do everything in his power to keep his only left maternal figure in his life.
"Never again, my Reign," Odelya had tears falling also now, "It's you and I forever now, we'll never be apart again, my boy.
