"Two men had been missing, sir."
Captain Reiner Braun stiffened at the report, his brow furrowing with concern. The barracks buzzed with activity as soldiers scurried to their tasks, but the news of the missing men hung heavy in the air.
"Who are they?" Reiner demanded, his voice cutting through the din of the room.
The young recruit before him swallowed nervously before responding. "Private Heinrich Bran and Corporal Ernst Vogel, sir. They were last seen patrolling the outskirts of the compound undercover early this morning."
Reiner's mind raced with possibilities. The compound was supposed to be secure, especially with heightened tensions in the region. The disappearance of two soldiers was no small matter, especially with the upcoming festival in Liberio's internment zone. Cases of missing guards had been frequent recently, adding to Reiner's growing anxiety.
He turned to the young recruit, "Investigate the case again and rely on it to a Marleyan work. Not mine." He commanded. The young recruit nodded, and speed walked away from the headquarters.
Still, he tried to focus on the brighter side—Gabi and the others would be thrilled by the festival, a rare moment of joy for the Eldians.
"Worrying about the Festival I see?"
Reiner turned to see Porco behind him, hands in his pockets with an annoyed pout-like face. "I get it, they're going to freak out, but don't worry about it they were going to announce that they were going to war with the devils," Porco assured him.
"That's not what I'm worried about," Reiner replied wearily. "Oh? Then what are you worried about smarty pants?" Porco walked up to him with a look that was supposed to be mean, but it wasn't.
Reiner hesitated, memories flooding back. He remembered the old days, the excitement, the camaraderie—but this was Marley, not home.
"Nothin'," he said, turning away. Porco raised eyebrows, confused by Reiner's answer. "Oh come on, I know you have something to tell me." goaded Porco. Reiner ignored his mouth and kept walking out. The sun shone and gave a kiss in his eyes, but thanks to the cloud, it supported his sight.
